ok so the car starts just fine in neutral. once you start letting out the clutch (while the shifter is still in neutral) the car will give a grinding noise and die. so i jack the back of the car up , start it , with the clutch still in i place it in 1st and give gas while releasing the clutch... no spin from back wheels , but now i notice that the shaft in the torque tube is spinning freely while still connected to the clutch side. so my torque tube broke off where connected to the transmission... can you take off the torque tube without removing the trans/diff. ?

You are going to have to remove the tranny/diff assembly to get to the internals of the torque tube.
Sounds like either a bolt has broken or the couplers came apart.

yeah i figured id have to drop it all to get that thing out.... well exhaust came off last night , so this morning im going to get started. thanks for the advice ill keep everyone posted.......

Like Anthony said, I bet it's one of the rubber couplers. BMW has a coupler that was a direct bolt on and an upgrade for the C5s. I don't know if this still holds true for the C6s.
