I'm looking for ways to improve the shifting on my 05 6spd.
I'm looking into getting a short throw shifter to see if it helps.
The stock shifter is sloppy (as we all know) and you really have to pay attention when shifting aggressively. Also, sometimes when I'm rolling up to a stop or red light in nuetral, stop and then try to shift to 1st when taking off it gets difficult to do so. Like it just doesn't have to go in. So i sometimes I have to shift to 2nd because i don't want to force the shifter. Maybe i'll try bleeding the old fluid out to see if it helps.
But as far as the shifting quality, what can be done to improve it? What is the best short throw shifter out there? Does it only shorten the throws or does it also improve the shifting overall?

A shifter like the MGW, Callaway, hurst, etc will help massively with precision and throw. The 1st gear lockout is a well known "feature" of the trans, I usually just "reclutch" and it will typically drop right into first.

Yeah i'll try that too. Most of the time it'll solve the problem. But when it doesn't....
I'll try getting a MGW, some RP oil and bleed the old fluid out and post my results. Hopefully it'll solve the problem

I would change the fluid before doing anything else... I've always ran Royal Purple on all my cars and it makes a huge difference in how easily it slides into each gear.
I haven't tried an aftermarket short throw shifter on my C6 yet, but you have to remember that the shifter is a lever, and any time you reduce leverage to make the throws shorter, you are also INCREASING the shifting effort (this is elementary physics; no way around it). On my C5 Z06, the Hurst short throw shifter I installed required an astounding amount of force to go into gear; at least 10-15lbs. Because of that I don't have any plans of gettig a short throw on my C6.
The only mod that will make your car shift easier is better synchro action, which you will get from a fresh fill of a better transmission fluid. Aftermarket short throw shifters will be more precise but will require more shifting effort.

What is this well known lock out feature? My manual says to reclutch and try shifting a second time. Is this due to a lack of synchro's in the trans or is it due to a special reason...the lock out you mention?
There is another post going that says MGW's have a rattle issue. The users enjoy the benefit that the MGW provides as well as the owner's personal support. So what is the objective point of view?
