Default Need help selecting cam

It's an 05 Z51 MN6. I "won't" be racing it at the track and it is my daily driver until i get my second car. However, I love the sound of a huge cam at idle. Any suggestions as to brand, size, and where to buy would be greatly appreciated. I already have some minor mods:vararam, kooks headers and catted system. What else needs to be or should be replaced in the swap??

go to crane cams.com BUT have allthe data ready .eg. weight of car, rear gearing, tire size. reasonable expections. budget, what type of "track". % of tracking vs street.i,m not faulting you but if ya call up and say i want a cam that sounds rad at idle.....SLP and other companies have head/cam packages,GM has a few cams.picking a cam is very hard and you must tell them what you want the car to do within reason.the biggest mistake is to over cam it,which quite a few people do then bitch about MPG or how they lost low end torque.a cam that made to "come on" at 5000 rpm will make it feel like a dog driving around town normal.be advised most cams raise the rpm power band.get a base line stock hp/tq and et. good luck and i hope this helps

LS2 MN6 here. Vararam, ARH 1 7/8" LT's, 3" X and Mid, no cats, straight through exhaust.

I run a Comp 234/240, .598/.608 112+3. It bucks a little under about 1200 rpm if I'm attempting to cruise at too low of an rpm. On hot starts, if I attempt to pull out of a parking space, per se, by engaging the power steering pump without any throttle, the car wont want to bring the idle back up from the bottom of a surge and may kill itself if I try to idle the car from the spot without any throttle. Easy enough to just give it a blip, in my personal opinion. Those are the "driveability issues" I've had, in their entirety. I run this cam through a SPEC 3 Plus as well, so slipping the clutch isnt a very viable option. I usually engage it at a pretty low rpm, and the cam has never killed the car due to clutching into gear at a low rpm.

Many people will complain that a cam my size isnt streetable. I've found it to be quite streetable, personally. I lose a bit down low compared to smaller cammed cars with 1 3/4" primaries as opposed to mine with 1 7/8"s, but up top the car simply moves out.

I'd say if you are after a nasty lope, go with a cam in at least the 230's with lift in the mid .590 range with a 112+3 LSA. Up into the 240's and over .610, you'll certainly be pushing it.

Giving up drivability for power is garbage, I had a G5X4 cammed headed fasted tbodied C5Z and I felt like the landlord of a trailer park, big power by 7200rpm through the 3.90 rear...sure, but it was no pleasure to drive as i currently cruise my LS3 900-1000rpm around town and listen to tunes, GM wasn't that stupid in their cam selection

BOOST is the only viable "power adder" for me, but i'm still enjoying tuning what i have factory, not missing that ultra tweaked LS6 at all

I run a Comp Cams 230/236 .608/.618 113lsa on XFI lobes in my car. This is a high rpm cam, with some loss down low. The car drives great except from 1400-1600rpm, thats where it wants to lope. At 1700 rpm or 1300rpm, it's fine. A good tuner will do wonders. However, my car is not a daily driver so not sure if something this size, with the loss of low end torque, would be something to have in your car.

I have a Crane 228/232, 600/600, 112 +5 mechanical advance gound-in. It makes good power with a conservative tune and the other mods in my signature. SOTP says the torque is easily higher than stock from just under 2,000 and up and it's really not even soft below that, so the low speed response is fine. Conversely, because of the +5, my peak HP is lower than it would be with a more normal +2 advance. I have very limited drivability issues and I don't notice them anymore. I like this cam but it does not sound like a "huge cam" at idle to me. It just sounds like a "healthy" cam at idle. The car twitches but it doesn't really shake. You'll probably want more than this to meet your huge cam goal. Just be sure to carefully consider the relative loss of low and/or lower mid-range torque, if you go really big on your cam.

When I do a cam it's going to be for a lot of lope...dont even care about the power too much, I just miss having a cammed car

Something with a split duration 22x/23x (low side of that) and under .600 lift with 112lsa

If you want the sound without murdering driveability, something in the 224-228 duration/580ish lift range would be good for you.

Get it on a 112 degree lobe separation if you want a fatter power band and a lopier idle.

Hi guys,

With camshafts, there are a number of different options to choose from, which is why we have such a variety of cams so we can try and meet everyone's needs.

Take for example our G5X1 camshaft, one of the most popular daily driven packages we have. This cam is focused on the idle to 6500 RPM range, has a smooth idle with just a little bit of that muscle car rumble. Stock torque converters can be used with this cam.

Stepping up a few notches would be our most popular, the G5X3. Designed for a little more RPM range, this cam focuses in on the 2400-6800 RPM range with a more radical idle. Automatic cars will need a higher stall torque converter to use this camshaft.

We offer our 'Executive' line as well which feature smoother idle characteristics, and more much closer to our smaller X1 line of cams.

Give us a call or email and I can go into a detailed package that would meet your needs!

I have a Comp Cams XER281 in an LS3 with the appropriate bolt ons. 232/234/.598 on a 112LSA. The idle, with the NPP's open, is just flat mean. It does have some low speed issues which are easily manageable with the mn6 and 4.10 gears. Don't know if this cam would be compatable with an A6. Also, the guy that did the tuning did it exclusively on the dyno. I'm hoping a retune, with a little time spent on the street, will be better. It's not my daily driver....however, I'm liking the cam more every time I drive it. I'm getting used to its strengths and weaknesses. All in all, just about everything I was looking for.

Listen to Anthony...he wont disappoint.

Ive put almost 20k miles on my G5X3 head/cammed 06 Z51 MN6 Daily Driver and still love every second of it. I cant pull up to a stop light or even fill up with gas without drawing a crowd.

I have a pretty conservative tune so i didnt murder my gas mileage. Really the only difference i noticed from stock driveability was the increased idle to 900RPM. It took me a few days to get used to starting from a stop in first gear again. Also, when on the highway if you have it in 5th or 6th gear under 1500RPM and try to stomp it, it will hesitate a second before going....but i think thats pretty much the same for any cam at such low RPM's.

Seriously, give Anthony a call and pick his brain on what you want, he'll make sure you get the perfect combo for what youre after.
