Is there a long tube header package that bolts directly to the stock midpipe? The dual exhaust on my LS3 looks as good as any aftermarket and it seems like replacing it is such a big waste.
The original cast iron manifolds and catalytic converters only extend down to the rear of the engine block (next to the oil pan) and then connect to the original mid cross over pipe which then extends through the tunnel and connects to the over axle pipes just in front of the rear axle.
Long tube headers extend further than the stock manifold/cat combination which requires an aftermarket mid crossover pipe that extends back and will connect to the stock over axle pipes. You have the option of ordering the aftermarket mid pipes with or without cats installed.
As long as you order the matching mid cross over pipe with your header they will connect to the stock over axle pipes. You must decide if you want to retain the cats or not. It will cost more for hi-flow cats, but if you have any type of inspection it is highly recommended.

So no way around having to get a new x-pipe, huh!? Dang it!
