Hey guys,

I did a little research and found out that the bolt in the harmonic balancer for some of the 05's was made too short. Unfortunately yesterday mine decided to back out and throw off an accessory belt, leak some oil on my exhaust and smoke up my cabin pretty good. So questions,

1. Has anyone else had this happen before they proactively had their dealer fix this problem.

2. If so, did they have to replace any engine internals? I talked to one guy who said his crackshaft got stripped and they had to basically get a whole new engine.

3. I am out of warranty. Has anyone had this happen and GM fess up to the mistake and cover the parts and labor?

4. Any advice and this matter?

I am pretty . At least it happened in the middle of October and not May.

As always, thanks for any input.

05's have bad rear ends and now I guess bad harmonic balancer bolts.

Another of the worse early C6 engineering defects. Maybe the worst as it had affected about 2% (or more) of '05 C6's up to VIN 11036, as I recall.

Be real nice to the right people and GM might just pick this one up:

I believe there was another thread on the forum about the same issue, car out of warranty. GM covered it. Now is the time to become good friends with the local service manager..good luck..

Talk to the service manager. My car wasn't in the affected VIN range, and the bolt didn't back out, but the balancer warped and caused the belt to chirp. They put on a new balancer, bolt, and belts for free under the goodwill program. I didn't even have to ask, they just did it. Saved about 900 bucks.

My 2005's harmonic balancer actually seperated and the outer part moved forward about 1/4 inch. It was not in the range of defective VINs. I suspected that GM would not cover it since I have a procharger, so had LG Motorsports fix it.

Maybe you could post or pm him the approximate cost in case GM doesn't cover it so he knows the ballpark he's looking at.

I just had GM replace my Climate Controller and A/C compressor on my '05 under the Goodwill program. They made the offer to cover the controller (~$1,000) and when they quoted me $1800 to replace the compressor, as soon as I recovered from the smelling salts, I asked them if GM would cover that as well.....and they did, although I had to pay labor.

I'll be that they take care of you.

Where did the oil come from?

I believe the issue started out with a torquing machine improperly calibrated at the factory....and wasn't caught until vin 11036 was on the line. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

Isn't there a TSB on that suspect bolt?

Thanks again guys, yeah, i did see that thread. Good info to have before going to talk to the service manager. My bolt back out completely but did not pop off because something is blocking it. So I assume that when the pulley came off a little that a seal was broken? There was a good amount of oil, but it was not leaking which makes me think it was only leaking when in the throttle which would create motion and pressure pushing the oil out. I'm a little anxious. Hopefully all goes well and GM will cover it.

I pleaded my case to GM and they agreed to go 50-50 on the cost of the new harmonic balancer, bolt, seals... So instead of $1250 or so now I am covering $625. So, all you 05'rs, beware of your weak rear end and your harmonic balancer bolt.
