Yesterday I was doing something I don't usually do, which was doing hard launches from about a 15 MPH roll. With the paddle set in 1st I hit the rev limiter and got the x on the HUD before I could shift.
I tried again, this time hitting the upshift paddle at what I thought was well below redline with the same result.
For my third attempt, I started with the paddle so that the car would be in 1st, then immediately moved the shift lever to D. That time it shifted to second.
Does anybody have any hints as to what could be causing this?
You are too slow, not hitting the + hard enough, or too much tire spin it does not like to shift via paddle mode while spining... If you have tire spin roll into it or bump it to D like you said

Just FYI I also have an A6. Last week I drove my wife to work & on the way home I decided to get on my Vette. I didn't take it out more than
4000 rpm and shift manually. I only really bury it at the track. However, to give you an example. I can hit second & third & I get a rubber squirt. Almost like my old manual. Last week I hit second around 3800 & it shifted very fast, slid slightly & did the same thing when I hit 3rd. Now it was cold out, around 32/34 deg. & LS engines run best at those temps, plus the tires are cold and hard....but I enjoyed it!
What shocking transmission abuse!
The paddles are OK but not instantaneous on the upshift, very quick on the downshift.
You need to paddle up approx. 3-400 rpm before desired shift rpm, this can be somewhat helped by a trans. tune.
Chuck CoW has a great A6 tune and engine tune for the A6/ LS2 or LS3Corvettes or any GM vehicle, substantial improvements with his tuning.
My '07 A6 coupe (440+/- rwhp) has the CoW tuned A6 and CoW 3.15s and it responds quite well.

This has been my case also. If the wheels are spinning the TC wont let me shift while in paddle mode and I get the X on the hud. Also if the car dicerns any yaw at the same time it really delays your shifting.
Thnx for the info on going to D mode, I will try this.

I really don't want to mess with a tune under warranty. It is a great running car as is. I just thought it was weird that the thing would run up against the rev limiter rather than let you shift.
Yes very wierd,
I have run into this even when the car is not out of shape at all and still very much in control. One poster was saying that the TC and AH wont let you shift if it figures a shift will makes things worse. I think its a little overkill.

Yes, with TC & AH on the system will not shift if spinning is detected. You can turn those off and you will notice the difference but you could encounter other problems doing this if the car gets out of control.

From what I understand about the TC and AH, when you go into competition mode it only turns off the TC and the AH stay s on.
Any thoughts on this?

step, the only thing i can add is i cant upshift unless I'm at certain speeds.
Where you maybe at low speeds by high RPM's?? In other words tires spinning winding the engine up but not going fast MPH wise for the ECM to see enough speed to allow the upshift. I dont know if thats how things work but the only 2 cents i can add, paul

You are correct, when in competition mode the AH works with a wider window. It still has some control over the vehicle but not as much.
From the posts I've been reading you should start off in Competition mode paddle in 1st. Once you launch slip it into D and head for the end of the quater mile. Does that sound right?
