Default Oil Change > DIC Update

I've searched dozens of threads here but can't find the answer to my question. That question is: "When the oil is changed, what tells the computer (DIC 'oil life remaining') to reset to 100%?" I've never changed the oil in my Vette and all of this computer stuff is different to me.

A bit of extra info for you. If you reset the oil life monitor while the car is running, it will only reset to 99%. Not a big deal but I don't want you getting concerned if this happens.

that oil life indicator doesnt work. dont trust it. I change my oil and at 3000 miles it still said something like 50 or 60 percent on every occasion. I just reset it so I dont get lights saying low oil life.

I couldn't tell if the guy above is acting stupid in the interest of sarcasm or he's not acting and thinks he knows more than the engineers/$$$$millions of dollars of research. There are also tests that show the most wear an engine experiences is in the first 3000 miles of an oil change.

Sometimes the 3000 mile change isn't sufficient. I had my "change oil" light come on after less than 1500 miles...but I had a lot of racing miles on that oil change. I've also had it go 10K miles on my daughter's '99 coupe...it has ~140000 miles and is still going strong. Obviously I'm a believer in the "new" technology...it's been on GM cars for over 15 years now so it's not really "new" anymore.

New tech or not it is in your cars best interest to change your oil more frequently than 5 or 6k miles. Ive been working on cars for a while and have seen the results of an every 3k oil change versus an every 5 or 6k oil change and 3k wins every time. Your driving style may warrant an oil change every 1500 if your racing it but most arent and 3k is best.

The only thing beneficial is to the oil companies, selling lots of oil.

Been working on cars a few years myself. (Since about 1962.) Both garage work and my own vehicles

Hey it’s your car and your money.

Don't bother, some people are too stupid to talk to. We're not too far from having 30K-40K mile oil change intervals, we're already half way there with our present cars and the new technology is 4-5 years away. Can you imagine him going around still chanting the 3000 mile oil change mantra from the '60s?

Somebody please drag Batman into the 21st Century.

I wait until the DIC tells me to change the oil in one of the vettes, then I put the used oil, with a new filter, in my other cars.

- '98 S-10, my drive to work vehicle. It's got 175,000 miles on it and runs like brand new.

- '01 Nissan Altima, wifes drive to work vehicle. 119,000 and runs like new.

I also use it in my Kubota tractor and the lawnmower.

Well when you change the oil in your car it comes out black. Thats because its dirty and burnt. If you want that stuff rubbing up against all your bearings and parts for 5k plus miles be my guest. Its your engine. Ill stick to the old school every 3k regardless of how advanced you may think oil has gotten. Better safe than sorry.

synthetic oil does not "burn" under normal conditions. the color of synthetic oil has nothing to do with it's ability to properly lubriciate. sorry. what's the big deal? if you feel that YOU should change your oil every 3,000 miles, have at it.

The oil is black because that's what color it changes to when it neutralizes the acids in your engine due to combustion byproduct blowby and moisture...it certainly isn't burnt. When the new oil mixes with the residual oil and begins to work, it turns black within 500-1000 miles. So by your reasoning, you should be changing your oil every 500-1000 miles..."If you want that stuff rubbing up against all your bearings and parts for 5k plus miles be my guest". You don't even follow your own illogical thinking.
It's not just oil that has gotten better, engine controls do a much better job of minimizing combustion byproducts getting to the oil than in the '60s and engine operating temps are much higher today which gets rid of a significant amount of moisture compared to the '60s. Do us a favor and educate yourself...or keep posting and continue to show your ignorance.
Do you happen to work at a Jiffy Lube??? That would explain a lot.

Finally we get to the bottom line...You change oil based on emotion, which is FINE!!! Just don't try to BS people with useless opinions....
