Default Exhaust removal/install HELP!!

Hi all,

I am planning on changing my exhaust (muffler catback only) and have read many threads where it says it is necessary to remove the h pipe to make the swap. My question is, if I drop the mufflers from the rubber hangers first and wd40 the pipes where they go into the h pipe, can I remove the mufflers without removing the h pipe. The mufflers I am going to install have a two pipe design before they go into the h pipe. I am trying to avoid removing the h-pipe so I don't destroy the studs. I will be jacking up the rear and performing the operation in my garage. Thanks and Happy Turkey Day!!!

You do not have to remove the H-pipe, just unclamp the muffler pipes from the H-pipe. It will be tight so make sure you have ample room under the car as you will have to use some strength and some twisting and turning to get the pipes separated. You can do it just be patient and it does help if you have a friend.

Happy Thanksgiving....forgot what muffler system are you installing.

Afte re-reading your post I think I know why you were told to remove the H-pipe, when you mention a cat-back system that means the H-pipe is being changed out along with the mufflers.

If you are just changing mufflers you are not doing a "catback". Removing the HPipe makes the muffler removal much easier, it gives you room to move the mufflers around to get them around the axles.

What makes you think you will destroy the H-pipe studs?

go to harbour freight and buy a pipe expander, it will save your life. When you wrestle the old exhaust out of the existing h-pipe the new pipes will not go into the old h-pipe easily. Mine would not at all. however a 15 dollar pipe expander and a few turns of the wrench it all slid in just fine with no effort.

I've got a 2006 A6 and just did an axle back on mine a few weeks ago. Removing the H-pipe was much easier than I imagined it would be and it is a pretty light weight piece. It made the job much easier. I didn't have to remove the rear sway bar though even though most people, and the instructions, said to do so.

The hardest part for me is getting the tips straight and level. I've still got one that sits just a little two far forward now and I've been under there twice now trying to get them straight. I think I'll get it worked out this weekend.
