Default Time for a V1-HUD interface

Okay folks, my new '09 3LT Vette is getting picked up tomorrow and should be delivered in a week or so.

I want my V1 to talk to my HUD. I know it can be done. How? See this:
http://www.swarga-research.com/.

Now, I had a '00 Camaro SS and I was jealous of the Vette's HUD, so I built my own, with a V1 interface (see below).

So making one for the Vette will be a piece of cake, if I can get a hold of the communications protocol for the HUD (I already have the V1 protocol, with an interface developed from my Camaro HUD design), or sniff the right bus and figure it out.

A few questions:
  • Do we have the communications protocol and command set for the HUD? No joy on my exhaustive searching.
    • Do we know where to get it? I suspect it will cost some good $.
  • If not, where are the data for the HUD?
    • Is it on the CAN or OBD-II busses?
    • Is it buried in the IPC/HUD class 2 serial data on the IPC/HUD harness?
    • Do we know the communications parameters (speed, baud, parity, etc.)?
  • I'm guessing the data from the NAV to the HUD are located on that IPC/HUD serial data line?

Any insight would give me a good starting point.

Just like my HUD for the Camaro, I'm not planning to sell this and intend to make the plans available freely to community. If other GM cars have HUDs, its audience may not be limited to us.

Thanks!

My Camaro HUD I built:

Thanks. Unless I missed it, I didn't see it and I dug hard.

There was a post showing that it exists (first link on my original post), but no information as to communications protocol and command set, which is what I'm soliciting for.

Thanks.

Class 2 data is communicated on a single wire at an average of 10.4 Kbps.
The bus is active at 7V nominal and inactive at ground potential. When ignition is in RUN, each module communicating on the class 2 line sends a state of health message every 2 seconds to ensure the module is operating properly.

Splice pack 205 is located under the left side of the instrument panel near the data link connector

C6400hp,

Thank you very much for the diagram. It clearly illustrates that the HUD communicates with the SAE J1850 line of the DLC. Though I'm surprised it's not on the higher bandwidth CAN/GMLAN bus (what is on that bus in the Corvette?), this is great news for me since I have all the interfacing hardware and software done to communicate with that bus and the V1. It will just be a matter of taking the info from the V1 and packaging its bits into the HUD's language. A matter of pushing out some code for me at this point.

Probably what I will need to do is sniff that bus with my hardware and pick out the HUD traffic and try to understand it. Any idea what the target address of the HUD is? If not, I will have to create traffic on the HUD from the nav unit and pick it out.

Great project for when it snows here and my new car is forced to be a garage queen.

I am not sure, I just looked in the service manual for the info to help contribute to your project. I cannot wait to integrate the V1 into HUD. I will sniff around the manual some more and see what other info I can find.

I really appreciate your help. Whatever else you can find, please let me know.

This project is frustrating in that it's so simple (heck, I'm damn near done) - I'm just missing a few critical pieces of information.

Awesome. I'm designing the new board now. It recycles so much of my original Camaro design, that this is super-easy. I will post an image of the board's CAD layout shortly. It'll be about 2.5"x1.5", has a V1 connector on one side and an OBD-II connector on the other to get on the serial SAE-J1850 line to talk to the HUD. Parts would be less than $100 to get and maybe 2 hours of labor soldering stuff.

Once I get my car, I can start sniffing the traffic on the bus. This shouldn't be too hard.

Alrighty, the first board design is complete! It was a piece of cake since it almost entirely came from my previous Camaro HUD design. All I need to do is determine the command set, which should be relatively easy. Of course, if anyone has it, send it my way. I think it will just use the same command set and formatting as when the nav unit/XM data are sent to it. We'll see.

Oh ya, I need my car too! It is being shipped from the dealer tomorrow - hope to have it in about a week.

I've created a webpage to post my progress. I will post the URL soon. It has a pic of the current board layout.

Nice to have today off

08crm,

You are correct, indeed it has! And the first link I posted on my original post is the very video I'm sure you're referring to. What no one has yet published is how to do it, which is what I'm working and will publish when complete.

Thanks.

Okay, here's the website I put up to share my progress:

http://sites.google.com/site/c6v1hud/

And here is the current board layout, it's about 2.5" x 1.5". At this point, I won't be able to get any more work done on things until I get my car and start sniffing the data on the bus to figure out how to talk to the HUD. Give me a few weeks It'll get done.
