I went to track day at MIR yesterday and ended breaking something in the shifting mechanism. I now no spring pressure side to side and no ability to shift out of third. The whole shifter just wobbles around like it is barely attached to anything, although when you go side to side you hear a clanking in the tunnel. I took the shifter out at the track and found it to be in good condition, my problem seems to be further down the line.
I'm not sure if it is in the linkage or trans but I've been having issues with shifting for awhile now where it just felt too stiff and hard to get into gear, especially at WOT. I know what it feels like to be loosing a clutch and it wasn't the same. When the car was new, I could shift easily with or without the clutch, it's only been about the last 6 months that it began to feel real notchy and hard to get in at times. I replaced the shifter with an MGW and that made shifting more precise but even harder to get it in gear due to the short throw. I also changed the Tranny fluid to Royal Purple and that made no difference either...
Before it broke, I was shifting hard at WOT to 3rd and seemed to hit a no mans land in between 3rd and 5th, I pulled it back out and went directly into 3rd again and then to fourth without a problem, but when I downshifted into third as I was decellerating at the end of the run, that's when I noticed the failure... Any ideas what it might be? I have done all the work on this car myself and have a lift so I'd like to at least attempt the fix on my own...
Here is a pic of the pin that came out...

Did you just pull off the shifter or that whole damn mechanism that it bolts down to? I didn't really look at what happened yesterday.
I pulled the entire MGW shifter out and then took it apart as well to make sure there wasn't anything wrong there as well. The shifter is fine... I talked with RPM Transmissions and they tended to think that something in the trans went. Now I just need $4,195 plus shipping to do a Level V Trans and a Level III Rear. Oh yea, forgot another $1500-2000 for the clutch... Donations anyone???
I know how you feel..I broke my A6 (in my 08) with less than 4K miles, but I had already changed the gears and torque converter so no warranty. Had it rebuilt by LG to racing specs, added an aux trans cooler, larger stall converter and cost me $4500.00 Trans was shipped to one of the trans places up north. I know it will prolly break again.......but I hope not soon.

mine did the same exact thing...got stuck in 3rd gear..just wobbled around side to side, so i took the shifter out thinking it was that, but it wasnt..i then took it to my mechanic where it ended up being a 5 dollar roll pin..too bad he had to pull the tranny to fix it though..took 2 days..
Hey man, thought I would come over to the c6 section hoping it was a minor issue. Any way to confirm it is the trans before spending $5k? If you do need a new clutch.... Not sure if it fits a C6, but I will have either a brand new or fully rebuilt (new discs) Exoskel for sale shortly if you want a deal.
Good meeting ya'll. Sorry to hear about the bad luck!

Well, maybe I'll get lucky and have it be a roll pin in mine as well... Where exactly was the roll pin, in the trans or linkage to the trans? I still might upgrade everything while I'm at it if I need to pull it out anyway. Any idea what caused yours to go bad? Did it have any shifting issues prior to it going?
Here is another issue with it being stuck in 3rd... After I got home from my long ride home in 3rd gear from the track, I turned the car off and then disconnected the battery since I can't put it in reverse like the 05 needs to shut off the ignition. Know when I hook up the battery it wont start at all. The battery has a full charge and I even put a jump pack on it to be sure, but nothing. It started fine at the track but I didn't disconnect the battery at the track, know I cant even get it out of my garage unless I push it with someone inside holding in the clutch!
I dont know why exactly it's doing this, the only thing I can think of is that the computer needs to see Reverse after the battery is hooked up before it can start.
Isaiah that blows...I have my buddy's broken trans in my garage and just looked at it. There is a roll pin that hooks the shifter rod to a little rod coming out of the trans above the input shaft. Bad news is you have to pull the trans to get at it as it's internal to the tube/trans connection.
From my memory, there are also a couple of allen bolts that hold the shifter box to the torque tube, if those came loose your shifter won't work properly as the box must be firmly mounted for the shifter to work. As I recall you can get at those from inside with the console out...I might be wrong on that as I've only done C5's....but that's where I'd start.
You don't want to know my next suggestion which would be bent shift forks.

Get a stock exchange unit and a tex clutch and pay my plane ticket and I will help you swap it out for free. It will cost less than 3k total.
None of the easy stuff wrong like the roll pin or the torque tube mount?
i was going to post some pictures of the issue for others to see and still will but it was the roll pin, it's about 3/4's of the way out. Just chalk this up to another issue I've had with this car, that makes around 20 in 50,000 miles... I'm going to upgrade the rear, trans and clutch while I'm at it.
