A buddy of mine told me that there is a computer in my 2006 coupe that remembers everything you do. Hard braking, speeding, rpm's, etc. And that if I took my car to a "track day" and blew the engine or otherwise screwed something up, the warranty wouldn't cover it b/c GM would see the history of my driving behavior when the incident happened.
I wouldn't say it remembers everything. It does, however, have an event recorder that, in event of airbag deployment or sometimes SES/CEL illumination, records data leading up to the "event" . Someone with a Tech2 can read that information. While it is not in massive detail , i.e.: remembering the highest speed you've goten to or everytime you've hit the brakes hard, it will tell engine rpm, speed, what "nannies" were on or off (tc/ah)and what all the gauges read at time of event.
so is this only in the "event" of an airbag deployment? or any "event" that would throw a trouble code?
Which brings up another interesting thought... If you clear a trouble code (say you had a loose plug wire & fixed it), is the event still viewable by a tech2 later?
The information is stored in the Airbag Module, which is in the console behind the HVAC controls. In the case of hard braking or evasive maneuver it stores the 5 seconds prior to the incident and the 5 seconds after. This information remains until there is another incident and the information gets written over. It stores several readings, speed, rpms, whether or not brakes were applied, make and model of vehicle, and throttle position. In the case of an airbag deployment, the information is written permanent and cannot be erased.
I read an article somewhere that this information was subpoenaed in a case where someone was killed in an accident. This information showed that the driver (02 corvette) of the other car was doing 130 mph. They were trying to change his conviction to murder.
wow. i would think that would be a violation of some privacy laws or something. But then again, if someone got killed and it's your fault, who gives a crap about your privacy? Right?
Thanks for the info guys. I was concerned about the privacy issue. But if the info is stored in the airbag (not readily accessible by GM) then I have no problems with it.
not sure about the C6...I am assuming there is a "black box"
because...
I also have an 04 Ford FX4 F-150 it does have a black box and it does record data on driving behaviour and is only to be used if involved in an accident and only by a court order yadda yadda...it records roll & pitch, speed, accelerator position, rpm and a whole list of items...I was not aware of this until after purchase...have not been in any accidents thus far and "oh well"...2004 they started intalling these in cars/trucks...2005 there were in all if not most of the Fords...my 2004 Escape does not have the box...the 2005 Corvette is the only GM product I own...
