Default Issue removing drivers side head

As anyone who's done this already knows, the drivers side head has 4 bolts going into the front side of it that attaches the alternator and a couple of other things. The two top ones can be easily backed out, but the bottom ones are partially behind the the large pulley below the alternator!

My first thought is that the entire bracket could come out with the head, but that would require a disconnect of some fluid lines (power steering? I haven't checked yet)

The other option would be to try to remove the pulley, but there isn't much room down there and it might not be possible.

What is the procedure to do this with minimal disassembly?

You can unbolt the bracket and just leave it in place. Its easier to get to that last bolt if you take the waterpump off. Then get at it from the pass side of the car. You will have to pull the bracket away from the head as you loosen to continue to give you access to the bolt. Its not fun, but not impossible... done it quite a few times. It helps to have a gear wrench just make sure you leave yourself enough room to pull it off before using a regular wrench.

Thanks! That makes sense, it'll be a tight squeeze to get the bracket to travel far enough to disengage the bolts from the head, but it sounds like it's at least possible.

I just did this and its a breeze and I didnt have to remove hardly anything including the water pump or pulley. I did yank the 2 bolts for the ABS module mount to make easy room.

There are 3 bolts that hold the pump to the bracket and you can spin the pulley to get to them. Then it will just lay there while the hoses are still attached. Very easy and all the room you need.

I also used a Dremel to trim the bracket so at anytime, I can go back in (when I do my 402 ) and it should save a few momments of aggervation. Gear wrench is a must though.

Can you say " All the room I need "
