Default Clutch Fluid

I need to change my clutch fluid for the 1st time in my C6 Z06. What DOT 4 Brake Fluid is used? Is GM brand a must? Can I use a synthetic and does it make any difference?

I understand the ranger method as............

1. Remove fluid with a tukey baster or such.
2. Fill new fluid to fill line.
3. Replace cap.
4. Pump clutch 20-30 times.
5. Remove cap and check fluid for clarity.
6. If still murky color repeat all steps.

Can someone please confirm.

Prestone DOT4 brake fluid seems to be the most popular.

Go to walmart, get the prestone dot 4 brake/clutch fluid for under $3 and get a 2 stroke mixing syringe(sp?) for around $4. Its much better than a turkey baster

Yes - you have the method down. Be prepared to do this MANY times to get nice clear looking fluid again. Also be very careful with brake fluid and your paint. Brake fluid can eat paint quickly.

If you have some miles on your car and you haven't done this procedure before, don't expect to do it once or twice and be done with it. The first time you do it you might have to repeat the entire process 10-15 times. Once you start doing it regularly you won't have to repeat the process so many times.

FWIW I use Prestone DOT 4 for the clutch and Motul 600 for the brakes.

As mentioned, don't let the fluid get on your paint....use a mechanic's fender skirt. I 'mask' off everything around the clutch fluid reservoir so it looks like an operation at the hospital.

You might want to checkout Ranger's web site:
