Default Whine Update!!

Here's the deal. I have a whine only under power from 2200 -2800+ in fifth gear. Not so loud in 6th but noticeable.

Went to the dealer today and took their Corvette wrench for a ride, he seemed real knowledgeable. Not a question, the rear end is starting to go away.

They ordered a new one, should be here in 5-7 days. One day r&r.

So I'm happy that the solution was easy, not happy that it happened at under 3K mile.

I should also report that this dealer that is giving me real good service is not my selling dealer.

For those in the Daytona area this dealer is Tom Gibbs Chevrolet in Palm Coast. They also sponsor the local Corvette club.

I have never once heard of a stock unit ever developing a whine. Relax in the knowledge that its uncommon and not something to give anymore thought to. No product is ever 100% without some failure rate among even the best designs.

Odd that you never heard of a whine developing in the differential or transmission. It seems to be a complaint that is reported more than a few times in this and other forums.

As far as relaxing and not giving it any more thought, Well, I'm relaxed, thank you, and I won't give it a bit more thought than needed to ensure that the problem causing it is repaired.

I love you guys that think a machine with revolving parts and gears and pistons and all manner or things moving, like all the complaints about "top end noise" never for once thinking that you can hear injectors firing and even spark plugs, especialy in an aluminum engine, is supposed to be QUIET as a rolex watch! most likely the dealer is a good one like mine{who put a new mn6 in my 06 rather than rebuild it, because it would not go in reverse 8000 miles} and doesn't have time to deal with a customer complaining about "noises" and since GM paying for it, is just going to replace it, and BTW this is only the third thread I've seen on gear whine

Great news. It's nice to hear that this was handled the way that it was supposed to be handled.

Actually, I'm real familiar with a machine making a whole bunch of different noise's. I turned wrenches on locomotives for 35 years, they make a lot of different noise.
I also know what a bearing sounds like when it is going away. I can live with the squeaks, noise and rattles that come with these cars. But a noise that will result in a rear end failure, that could leave me at the side of the road hundreds of miles from where I want to be, yup, I'm going to complain about it.

Oh, for more threads, I found the search feature is your friend.

Now, hold on here, you said the whine was loudest in FIFTH gear, the gears have no effect on the diff, if your getting more noise in fifth than say sixth, thats because the gears are spinning faster and that would lead me to believe thats it's the tranny not the carrier bearing in the diff, BTW I worked for GM's electromotive division outside of chicago for years, I assembled the engine's for locomotive's and then set them up per customers specs 1600-3600 hp, and I now work as a machinist in ca

That was my initial thought as well. But, there's always a but, as was explained to me that the torque load changes as different gears are utilized. I was at first getting in 5th loud, picking it up slightly in 6th, now it has become much louder. I'm also now hearing it 4th. So whatever it is is getting worse. I'll probably park it for the holiday's so no major damage occurs.

Apparently this dealership has had some experience with the sound and the problem as on of the mechanics said "another one". I'm going to have to bow toward their experience and knowledge on this one. When I was messing with rear ends and 4 speeds they were separated by a few feet.

EMD's, that's all I worked on. I was reading that railroads are looking for machinists all over. I know that in Boston the commuter rail and Amtrak had feelers out for experienced folk.

Of course your in CA and hopefully the engines are smaller and lighter.

well I work for a major paper company now, and your right as long as it's on there dime let them make the call, on my 06, one day it just would not go in to reverse, no reason just would not go! all other gears just fine! I don't think the service manager wanted his mech. rebuilding it so they opted the replace it, this has been a problem I've seen other people on the forum with the same problem, when you get it back keep listening for the same noise you might get a new tranny too! After they used CNC machine's to get rid of the machinist's, their all "looking for them now and maintenance mech's too! problem is that they don't want to pay worth a crap! hell I got a $30.000 tool box to do their work and then they look at you and offer you $22.00hr and their charging the customer $150.00 hr
