Default Trans ratios

Try this, A4 I believe came with 2.73 from factory with 3.15 optional.
A6 came with 2.56 and 2.73 optional

That's a cool site, great information.

I'm trying to figure out how much I'm missing. I decided to get an '05 when I could have got an '06, thinking the only thing I'd be missing, was the thumb shifters.

But I got to thinking, what was the reasoning behind going to a 6 speed automatic. Was it to improve gas mileage? Or was it to improve acceleration? was it a combination?

Would it be worth it for me to transplant an A6 into my car?

Yes.

No.
Would not be worth it at all, the A4/4L65 is still a great automatic and certainly gets the job done very well.

thunderkyss:

I'm not sure, but I believe the only difference between an A4 and an A6 (beside the extra gears) is the final drive is .70 in an A4 and .67 in an
A6. I don't know how feasible it would be to "transplant" one drive train into the other. I think there is a difference in not only the trans computers but also the BCM and the ECM, to say nothing of the associated wiring and controls, possibly even the torque tube. My 06 has the A6 trans and after having the trans tuned, I love it. I also modded the paddles to put upshift on the right side and downshift on the left side, seems more natural to me.

you just want the 3.42 gears not the whole trans.

The really good thing about the A6 is it has very short gears for the first 4 gears and then overdrive for the last 2. It has a 1.53 third gear as compared to a 1.00 third gear in the A4. So the rearend ratios are very misleading for the A6. The 2.56 rearend with the A6 is the same as an A4 with a 3.92 rearend. So acceleration is fantastic. Then with the 6th gear, it's the same as the M6, you can cruise at 70 mph at 1500 rpm and get great mileage. Chevy really got this one right, it's like having your cake and eating it too!
