I will be heading out to a new track they are building locally this summer and would like to have an in car mounted camera, preferably one that sees the speedo or HUD, and out the windshield as well. I would like to find a low cost solution, but I hate to buy anything more than once. I am open to any mounting setup.
I use an inexpensive Flip video camera on the race track. They sell an accessory mount/strap which can be used to mount the camera on bicycle handlebars or even a bicycle helmet. I mount the camera on my harness bar. For what I want the Flip camera works fine. It only holds an hour of video so I take a laptop with me and download the recorded video to the computer to free up space for the next sessions or the next day.
Wind noise is a problem so I always tape a small piece of foam over the microphone. Trying to avoid wind noise, I once mounted the camera right on the dash behind the windshield. I was able to thread the Velcro straps (coming from the small mounting bracket) through the grill slats on the dash and it actually worked fine.
There are suction mounts you can buy for various cameras and some guys use 'lipstick' videocams. I've considered buying a camera mount for my harness bar and using my better Sony videocam but the cheap Flip camera works great for what I want.
I used the GoPro Motorsports Hero camera at a couple track days..me and my friend both have them..it was about $180 or so.
Its a neat little camera actually..very small, and has an array of different mounting options so you can mount virtually anywhere inside or outside the car (if they allow it). The wrist design lets you get creative with camera angles and such, it worked out well. We used 2, so we could show out the windshield and the driver/speedo etc. It was pretty fun!
The 2 biggest drawbacks, however, were that there is no screen on the camera (harder to make sure its aimed correctly) and the wind noise made the sound unusable (not really the cameras fault..probably something we could have done).
I'm not affiliated with the company or anything, but check it out at www.goprocamera.com

It mounts pretty much anywhere..and is well built. This is the most complete kit with the best camera GoPro offers. Some places sell different kits with lower model cameras..so be sensitive to that when shopping.
I use the flip mino camera
video of me at gateway international raceway in my old GTI "mounted with a headrest camera mount" I wish i could use that mount in the vette! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjg_VYNnfYM

I use my digital camera (Panasonic TZ3) attached to my Sharkbar harness bar. The camera can do 20-25min of 16:9 high-resolution video on a 4gb card easily. Pretty good video too.
I'm sure I'll probably see ya next year down @ Bluegrass. Can't wait to run it, and I'm already signed up for the first HPDE being held there (10/10ths) as far as I know.

Does it produce shaky video? I have a similar setup- vid cam on the harness bar, but mine shakes. Even with image stabilization.
