Don't run drag radials or slick tires.
Don't drag race the car or attempt to launch it very hard.
Avoid Wheelhop at all costs (this goes for any car with any kind of differential though).
If you plan on breaking rules 1 and 2, or have aspirations of making big power be prepared to replace your weak '05 rear diff with an 06+ or a C5 Z06 rear diff when it breaks. On street cars many have found the 2005 rear differential to be perfectly suited for most types of driving.
I bet someone will suggest a differential brace, but if you search around you will find plenty of people who have broken their diffs with the brace. Others argue that the brace's job is to prevent a broken diff. from breaking the transmission. I'd rather just not break anthing in the first place.

Some will suggest that a brace around the differential will make it stronger. Your best bet is to pick up a C5 Z06 differential for, what, $600-700 (I think that's what they go for) and swap it in. The C5Z diff is one of the strongest ones ever put on a Corvette. You'd spend at least half of that on the brace and still break it anyways
The weakness of the 2005 rear differentials is in the case design; there is not a whole lot you can do to strengthen it so if you plan on racing that just be mindful of how hard you launch and never let it wheelhop.
The 05 diff case was redesigned on 06+ because it was weak and prone to failure.
I can only recommend that if you want to beef it up you'll need hardened left and right output shafts. If you're doing that already go for a gear swap and the newer 06+ diff.
Finally, get the DTE Differently brace that ties the diff to the trans. Worth every cent!!!
New case will give you a better start and minimize the risk of failure in the case. L+R output shafts will protect the weakest internal links. DTE brace will minimize the risk of the shearing force thats inherent under load of the diff wanting to "snap off" the back of the tranny.
If you do these you will have probably the best protection for the rear end you can get.
If you are going to drag at all jus knuckle up and do these steps. You don't have to but then its a just a matter of time.
replace it now if you have the $$$ and the need to do it. if you wait till it breaks, you could run the risk of screwing something else up. say if youre on a strip and you light up the tires and you break the diff, you run the risk of taking a sharp (90 degree turn) into a wall. try explaining that one to your insurance agent
I would recommend replacing now. If you grenade a rear end you're looking at the potential for incredible collateral damage for axles, trans, trans output shaft, inner fender wells, etc.
You can get a decent price for the rear end for those that just want to upgrade their gears and offset the cost for the new one with those funds.
Best of luck...I wish a rear end catastrophe on no one!!!

Your differential is worth a LOT more when it is not in pieces
Not to mention that it is not uncommon for rear differential failures to cause transmission breakage as well...

Which is exactly why I have the DTE brace on mine. If I break the diff I'm hoping the trannie doesn't go with it.
Is there any thing I can do to prevent the rearend from breaking on my 05 c6?
Buy the RPM new unit is the forum c-6 ads from Drumhawk he had it built special and never put it in. Still on the pallet he'll cut you a deal. then you will be close to bullet proof! Just an idea!

Not to get into a he said/he said war with PowerLabs, but........... Look at my sig. I have a 2005 C6 that is highly modified and has been down the track.
I'm putting out big rw hp/tq numbers and have launched at 5k with DRs. I have, however, added hardened output shafts and the DTE brace.
If one just wanted to be safe with 500 rwhp, no track use but some street play, what would you suggest? A new rear with better parts or a Z06 stock rear? I've seen Z06 stock rears for $900, what's a new built unit usually run? I had no idea the 05 rear was weak. What's most cost effective?
