Default Trans fluid

I need to add some transmission fluid to my manual tranny. Besides the obvious "drain and replace with better fluid" option, what can I buy off the shelf at the local parts store that is the same as what's in there from the factory?

The manual calls for Dexron III ATF.
I just drained and refilled with Red Line D4 last night.
For those who have not done this, I have 32K miles and the fluid looked like used motor oil. I should have done this sooner.

I just noticed you have a C5. The info I posted is for a C6, don't know if it applies to your car. Check your manual.

No that was my C5Z. I actually have a C6 convertible and a C6 coupe and the convertible lost some fluid during a radiator swap and is giving a whine going through the gears so I need to add some fluid. Thanks for the info.

You can buy Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF at PEP Boys and other stores. It meets the Dexron III, spec "H" requirement.

The factory owners manual states the c6 Manaul transmission fluid is lifetime - no replacement schedule??? Why would GM suggest this? How often have other replaced and what replaced with?

and did the same. Changed it at 34k and it looked like crap(dark brown) with lots of metallic. Should have done it much earlier. I also used the Redline D4 ATF and the is a slight improvement in shift action although mine had always been pretty good.

tdelena,
Same here. I think I'll do it again in about 20K for good measure.

No idea, I'll read mine closer. But I can tell you it looked like burnt trans oil from an automatic, and I prefer clean fluids in my car.
I've seen 4 or 5 posts on this, so I went for it.

Makes sense to me. What harm could it do if you are using a compatible fluid. So far, looks like the Redline D4 is the most popular. I have only 10k on my new C6. I think I'll change it out now as I am sure there is some "break in" with the tranny. Why have all those metallic particles floating around in there.

Any feedback on that Z-max tranny additive I see on all the car shows?
