Default Questions about Replacing Fuel Level Sensor

Got an 05 MN6 Z51 coupe and my fuel gauge is reading empty regardless of actual fuel quantity. Check engine light, Fuel Low, and Service Fuel System are the messages I am getting.

I took it to the dealer, and the codes I have are P2068, P2066, P0452, and P0461, and was told I need to replace both fuel level sensors (left and right). They want to charge labor for removing the rear end, transmission, etc. I've done some research on the board here and it sounds like it can be done without removing all that, although a PITA. So I'm going to replace them myself.

What parts, besides the two sensors, should I go ahead and order? It sounds like the jet line inside the crossover pipe is commonly broken, so I'm going to go ahead and order that as well. Does anyone have the part number to that?

Also, looks like I need a lock ring removing tool to remove the fuel pump module. Is this something I absolulely need? If so, do I have to get it through the dealer or is this something I can get at an autoparts store?

Thanks for the help.

I can't help you with any part numbers but I just looked this up on my Alldata account and it didn't say anything about needing to remove the transmission and/or differential.

I have an account there as well and see the same thing. This is what I was told needs to be done by the service department at my local chevy dealer, with 10 hours of labor coming out to about $1300 plus parts. Ridiculous.

Very sad but not all that surprising.

If you really want to get their attention, go in there with the Alldata instructions in-hand, show them to the Service Manager and ask "So could you please explain to me where it says the transmission and diff need to come out?"

On second thought, never mind as they probably won't care.

I would suggest adding a can of Techron to a couple tanks of gas and see if it cleans the fuel level sensors. It fixed my C5 sensors. A lot less money and hassle.

The factory shop manual procedure to change the pump/sensor/fuel filter has you remove the torque tube/transmission/differential assembly.

Mine was done under warranty without removing the transmission and torque tube. It's a common problem with the 2005 and after mine was done in 2005 a software flash was developed to correct the problem in most cases. I would find a dealer that knows about the flash. The part replaced if necessary is a card in the left tank only.

Add a bottle of techron to the gas tank and pull the battery cable to reset the sensors. I did this to mine and have not had a problem since. Try this and let us know what you come up with.
