There is some talk going around that 2010 models will have direct injection- can anyone explain the direct injection system? Also can it be added to an LS3 motor and if so what would be invloved and what are the benifits of direct injection. Thanks in advance for the response.
And no, the 2010 won't have it. All you are hearing are forum rumors; anyone who actually KNOWS what the 2010 C6 will come with is not going to say a word about it

Hello,
Direct injection gets better mileage and increases horsepower and the reason it has not been done is cost.
Direct injection injects fuel directly into the cylinder for better fuel atomization with the above effect.
Car manufacturers want to sell cars and fuel has been inexpensive, direct injection is expensive but with the MPG standards increasing some of the GM fleet will have to get direct injection anyway.
I work for Saturn and we are a part of G.M. (for now) we got the first direct injection G.m. cars in our turbo sky. And back in our training we were told by G.M. that by 2010 all G.M. cars will have direct injection. I would imagine that could be where the rumor started. But A lot has changed since then.

Direct Injection is already in the CTS V6
The design for 2010 cars has been finalized for over a year, and they will begin production in a few months
The CTS V6, and the new Camaro use entirely different engines. DI coming to the current V8 line up is as likely as GM bringing the Cadillac V6 to next year's C6, IMHO.
While it is still possible that the 2010 Corvette could come with DI, I too highly doubt it.
It could work wonders for the car's already awesome fuel economy (and power) and the company's overall CAFE ratings as well if it did though.
I know GM has been working with DI on the L92 Gen IV v8 engine, however it seems likely they would wait until Gen V to be able to implement it on the LS engine line. Wardsauto had a nice article about it (in 2007), but it needs a subscriber login to view, however it has been posted on several other forums, including this one: http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f...uto-com-54138/
Very cool technology, fuel delivery is totally independent of piston & valve movement. For 2 strokes it allows clean emissions, better fuel economy & less oil consumption than 4 strokes, such as in the Evinrude E Tech. Always the cost side to this stuff.
