I do this EVERY time I install brakes. If I had a dollar for every brand new rotor that was out of spec for runout I would have a pair of ZR1's.

Dang... I can't believe that you are still using these rotors! Haven't you been having this problem for over a year by now?

I hope that my experience turns out to be better than yours... I have ordered slotted only (no cross drilled holes) EradiSpeed "Plus 2" rotors all 'round for my car. I'm going to have them "cryo'ed" before installation... maybe I'll be luckier than you were... and at a grand for a set, I certainly understand your disappointment!

Yep, sure have. I've just been too lazy to get them fixed or find out exactly what the problem is. I never thought about the dial indicator, will definitely do that to find out which is warped. My problem doesn't get any worse, or better. I didn't even know the slotted only were available, or I would have gone that route without a second thought. Cross drilled rotors are worthless. I can't believe mine have stress cracks, because they have never seen repeated hard braking.

Anyone know what is considered accepted runout for brake rotors?

Yes, Jarod, the BAER "slotted only" are a special order, but that presents no problem... just adds a week or so to the lead time.

I suppose that if you determine that yours are actually warped, you could buy slotted only rotors (just the rotors, not the whole rotor & hat assembly) and bolt 'em up to your BAER aluminum "hats." But, I'm sure that you have already thought of that option.

I'm curious, did you "bed" the new rotors when you installed them? I guess that what I'm really asking about what you did as compared to these instructions from our friends at Zeckhausen...

http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm

BAER is good stuff... I'm really sorry that you have had such a nightmare!

Default Excellent reading on brakes !

I dug around and [finally] found this... very informative...

It's a StopTech "White Paper" titled, "The 'Warped' Brake Discs and Other Myths of thge Braking System"

Interesting, thanks for the information. I wonder if you can "Blanchard grind" drilled and slotted rotors? Anyone?

Also, since I am running ceramic pads, I wonder if a switch to semi-metallic will cure my issue. It's been doing it so long, I'm sure the built up material is set, and will have to be ground off.

I tried, but I didn't do it correctly. I couldn't find a road that allowed me to do it. Unless I wanted to slow to almost a stop and accelerate on the freeway. Thanks for your help.

Yes, Jarod, apparently so.

Read down in the Zeckhausen piece; he talks about that very thing. There may be hope for your BAERs, after all. I sure hope so! I'd bet that would take out those annoying surface "cracks" too.

When I put the StopTechs on my Nissan 350Z, I was lucky enough to find a loooooong "service road" running parallel to one of our local highways. It worked out perfect, and only took a [very] few minutes.

My wife had a Mercury Cougar that was forever having "warped" rotors... set after set after set. Too bad we traded the car before I read the "how to" on bedding in brake pads/rotors. I'd bet lunch for the rest of your natural life that there was never a "warped" rotor on the Cougar... but the condition that Zeckhausen described.

I had a similar problem on another car. Turned out the rotors (which were new) were not the problem. The issue was the pads were too aggressive and they were generating too much heat which caused a much larger amount of hot gases, not pad gases just normal air getting really hot. Because of increased amount of hot gas, the pads were literally vibrating on the rotor. I had two choices either put on less agressive pads or increase brake cooling. Chose the pads, problem went away. If you still have the original pads just stick them on and see what happens. Slotted / drilled rotors should take care of this, but not always. The car did not have ducted cooling for the brakes like the Vette has and this just added to the problem.
