One can hydrolock their motor even with the stock air intake system if they try hard enough.

I also live in S. Florida and have NEVER driven my vet through a 3"+ puddle. These are usually easy to avoid in even in South Florida.
It can happen when it's not your fault. All it takes is someone else motorboating through standing water, throwing a wave. Once it goes into the Vararam there is nowhere for it to go except your engine. That's the problem with a closed system.

You got that right. Though it is more likely for the Vararam since its closer to the ground as well as being a front feeder to "catch those waves". The opposite the radiator back feeder type is higher off the ground than the front feeder and wont catch a wave, just maybe the backwash.
