Default Help

Hello, I recently got an 05 z51. I bought the car from a dealer, and the car has long tube headers, w/ a cai. The only problem is I dont know what kind they are. I tried to look on the sides of them but it doesnt say. Anyway, the car has a 12 month 12,000 mile extended warranty. My check engine light just came on. Well my friend is a mechanic and he scanned it for me and it says something like catalytic converter low efficency bank 2. Any idea why? or will the dealer cover that under warranty w/ the headers. I am afraid to take it in and it not be covered. But if it is something I can fix I will just do it myself.

Take it to Auto Zone or any parts store that can scan it for you and see what code comes up. Or do you have a friend with HP Tuner or LS1Edit?

Most likely it has been tuned and the dealer wil void the warranty.

Try to take a picture of the headers from below the car. I think people on the forum will be able to identify them for you from some good pictures.

I'm not positive about your year of car, but in mine, the stock cats are along side the engine just below the stock manifolds. If your car was originally like this, then the headers have taken the place of the stock cats. So either the stock cats have been moved to under the car or you have aftermarket cats. I'm not sure if your extended warranty will cover that or not. You'd have to look at the fine print.

There are oxygen sensors in the exhaust pipe both before and after each of the 2 cats. Since you are getting a cat related error, that means the engine tuning hasn't eliminated the cat monitoring. So I'd check the oxygen sensors and the wiring to them. If the cats were relocated, its possible the wiring had to be extended and perhaps that's causing your problem. The other thing that can be done is to eliminate the cat monitoring.

Hope that gets you started.

This could be a touchy issue. Long tube headers require the cats be moved which is a federal emissions violation. The extended warranty that came with the C6 might pay for the problem if the selling dealer handles the warranty work. If it's a GMPP that could be an issue. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Mark thank you for that info. I will try to take a couple of photos of the headers. I didn't realize that the headers take the place of the cats. Like I said I bought it from a dealer so I dont know if it has been tuned. I guess I will call the local dealer and ask. I bought the car in New York and I live in chicago. I will have to see if they will at least tell me the problem. But like you said, it might not even have cats. If that is the case then I will just get a tune.

Ok so I was able to snap some pics of the undercarriage. Here is the headers and H pipe. Can anyone tell me what kind of headers these are? And do I have cats, if so are they stock or are they apart of an aftermarket X pipe. I do know that the exhaust is stock. TOO QUIET FOR ME. Also what kind of cold air intake is this? Please help

Not American Racing, their pipe x's in front of the cats. Not LG's because the primaries would be showing in the second picture.
We really need a picture of the header collector to identify.
I'm guessing Kooks, then again maybe not,, I think Kooks has a name plate on their header...
Maybe TPIS..There are some pictures on their Ebay site.

Ok well that helps a little bit. I can't believe that there is no markings on the headers. If I were to put a corsa sport exhaust on would I need a cat back or just the mufflers?

They do resemble TPIS headers as they commonly use coated mild steel which those appear to be. Though these could also be some coated stainless steel brand as well and the rest of the system is obviously stainless.

You are going to have to buy the C6 system that has mufflers and the over axle pipe. That will bolt up to the mid-pipe right there along side the transmission. When you take off the stock stuff, the mufflers and over axle pipes are one piece..

Ok good at least it will be a little cheaper for just the mufflers and the over axle pipes. So the X or H pipe on there now is not stock right? I was just wondering because if I buy the exhaust I want to make sure it will fit.
