Default Service active handling woes

When I purchased our 06 Z51 six speed Coupe, I thought that I would not have to ever worry about EBTCM issues. GM surely would have learned a lesson and made the module better than the C5 EBTCM module.

During the warranty period, I had the dreaded SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING message on the DIC. I had the dealer fix it and they fixed some wire on the steering column. Good up until last week.

The wheels and tires are stock and its happing when driving straight, level, smooth road.

Im going to call the Customor Assistance Center and see what they say about service after the warranty on something that was serviced during the warranty period.

So,,,now its out of warranty and the messages are happening daily. I checked for DTCs with an actron scanner that checks for all DTCs and NONE are being displayed. They will clear upon cycling the ignition as expected but come back after driving for a while.

Whats the latest C6 Forum word on this type of failure of this module??

Any body else seeing this failure or had to deal with fixing what is causing these messages??

Thanks

Bill

Bill, Had the same problem with my 06 vert. I do not have telescoping wheel there fore I did not have the wiring harness problem causing the problem. All the codes on my car were communication failures. My dealer installed an in flight recorder and I ran the car with it for a month. The same codes appeared. TAC advised the dealer to install a new BCM and that cured the problem for me. FYI if you have a repeat issue that was repaired under warranty and it occurs again after warranty expires, the issue is still covered until it is succesfully repaired. Get it fixed!!

My vette keep getting the lights also and had an instance where the right front brake locked up which I understand is an issue with Active Handling. I've grown concerned after reading so many issue of wheel lockup with this problem. It definately can't be safe to have the warning on the DIC. I read stories where few have had a collison due to a right front brake lockup and signs of the active handling service warning.

Bill,

I also have the "Service Active Handling" DIC and my scanner produce no codes. It is an AutoRay Code Scout which has served me well.

What have you tried? Any success?

The most recent T.B. advises installing a plastic clip inside the steering column. This is a 20 minute fix, and if you have to pay for it, the clip is about $9 plus the labor. This should take care of it for you. It worked for me (2005 C6). I also told the service manger to just perform the T.B. and not run their scan first because I didn't want to pay $60 for the scan.

What is the function of the plastic clip?
Do you have a copy of the TSB?

2005-2008 Chevrolet Corvette

with Steering Wheel - Tilt, Telescoping (RPO N37 or N38)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This bulletin is being revised to update the models and provide new correction information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 06-02-35-002A (Section 02 -- Steering).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Condition
Some customers may comment on a Stabilitrak® or Active Handling System light being illuminated. Also, this warning light will be accompanied by a SERVICE STABILITRAK or SERVICE ACTIVE HNDLG message on the DIC.

Diagnosis with a scan tool may reveal a DTC C0710.

Cause
The most likely cause of a DTC C0710 on a vehicle equipped with telescoping/tilt steering wheel is high resistance in SWPS connector C202. Fretting terminal corrosion may be present in the SWPS connector due to the telescoping motion of the steering column. When the steering column is telescoped in and out, the female terminals within the SWPS connector may move on the male terminals of the SWPS. This movement between the terminals may cause a high resistance condition in the SWPS connector.

Correction
Remove the driver's side closeout (insulator) panel.
Locate the SWPS connector that connects to the steering angle sensor, located on the lower center of the steering column.

Install the clip (1), P/N 19179794, into the connector. This clip will act as a terminal positive assurance (TPA) and prevent any movement of the terminals.
Reinstall the closeout panel.
Clear the DTC with a scan tool and road test the vehicle.
If DTC C0710 resets during the road test, refer to DTC C0710 in SI.

I already had the plastic clip TSB installed by the dealer when it was under warranty and still have issues. I'm going to take the car back to the dealer and see if its still under warranty. If they will fix it, good. If not, I will see if a good ground cleaning and checking all the connectors for the EBTCM will resolve the issue. Its very weather dependent when it happens. Cold Damp weather seems to make the problem worse.

Looks like we got a double post going on this. But in case you did not see my answer in the other post, I had the same issue, ran a data recorder for about a month as well, and the dealer reflashed the computer and replaced a transmission module. Neither fixes made any difference. Finally, they went through the car and tightened all the chasis grounds and the problem has been solved ever since (several months ago).

Great info, I'll look into this. Do you know where the grounds are? I can find out with a service manual, but any knowledge of location would be useful. If this turns out to correct the problem, that would be great, and guess someone needs to notify GM that their zip tie clip method is worthless.

Would like this info too if someone has it handy vs. me looking around and "hoping" I got them all

I had a problem, turns out to be the wiring harness being chewed up by the engine pulley, resulting in inconsistent speed reading
