Just today I started to hear a squealing sound from under the hood .. It is DEFINITELY coming from the belt.. It is at an idle, could it be just an idler pulley ? What else under there could cause this..
I shut it off & sprayed a little WD40 on the Alternator and idler pulleys.. no help..
Any suggestions.. Could the bolt that comes lose on the pulley be causing this... It is just a constant squeal..
I just need some suggestions on where else I should look... and what to look for ? Its got me stumped..
Be careful John, it could be the crank pulley bolt starting to back out, it was an issue on some of the '05s. Even though you're out of warranty there might be a technical service bulletin (TSB) on it that would allow the dealership to fix it for free.
It might be something else altogether but I'd check the crank-pulley and inspect the belts with the engine off. Is the pulley loose at all or is there any fraying to the belts? If it looks good fire it up and check that the belts are running true and the harmonic balancer isn't walking. If in doubt trailer it to the dealership and have it checked. If it is the harmonic balancer you don't want it to 'go' and cause consequential damage.

Thanks Marc.. I'm not going to drive it,, & make an appointment with the local Chevy Dealership that I have a VERY GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH!
I trust them impeccably.. I'm supposed to race Sat in the CC.. and hope I can get it in to them before then...
I can also take it to a local shop who is also a very trusted place.. I might have the local shop check it first.. if no luck I'll go the Chevy,,,
Just hope to get it corrected BEFORE Sat..... Thanks...

I did all of what you said above.. none of the pulleys are wobbly.. the belt is tight and NO fraying... while running everything looks to be straight & true (belt & all pulleys i.e. idler, alternator, the main pulley all are tight.. I sprayed them with WD40 no luck...
I'll take to to the local shop first as its only 3 miles away, & he "Knows his stuff" (an old Comp Racer) if he don't find anything I'll go to the dealership I bought 3 cars before this one...
Checked it.. I had the AC off when I ran the motor...and still get the squeal.. If I put it in gear and hold the break and bring the RPM up to 1200 it will go away.. I've done WD40 again.. no luck. & I cant pinpoint exactly which pulley its coming from...
If you loosen each belt (no need to remove them) you can turn the idler pulleys by hand. Check for smooth turning with no "grittiness". Also check the alternator.
I had a chirping, like I had a bird under my hood, turned out to be the pulley tensioner bolt.. of course I found this out after the bolt snapped off and was stuck in the engine! Had bolt drilled out, got new tensioner pulley,, zero chirping now!
Exactly what are you squirting WD40 on? That stuff is certainly no magin potion... although many of us have used it like asprain-for-everything for years! apparently whatever you are doing with it isn't working of your present problem, and may even cause you some grief - small or large - down the road.
Good luck on finding & fixing this nuisance noise!
