I hit a bump hard with my '05 C6. It was enough of a jolt that my heads up display is now shaking as I drive. I can see a black plastic clip on the right side that looks like it came loose. Has anyone experienced this? How do I remove the HUD?
Yep, the spring that helps hold it in place may have come loose. You need to fix it otherwise you may not be able to see it after a while. Had that happen to my '04 Grand Prix. Fixed the spring and all was fine.
The HUD is secured to the inner dash assembly by two M6 nylon locking nuts and a screw. I can't imagine hitting any bump hard enough to loosen anything but I suppose the only way to find out is to take a look.
You don't need to remove the whole dash pad. You need to remove the instrument cluster though. Pull off the gauge cluster surround pod bezel thing then remove the four 7mm screws holding in the instrument cluster. With that out of the way you will be able to get at the HUD projector fasteners to see if they are loose or if something else is broken.
This EXACT same thing happened to me about 15 minutes ago. Hit a pretty bad pothole going about 20 mph. My hud position fell a few inches and is now all shaky. When I adjust the position it moves diagonally instead of up and down. Did you have any luck fixing this?
Mississippi road work !! The exact same thing just happened to me. Not being a very good 'fixer', where can I get this repaired and about what kind of cost is involved?
well to have someone fix it will be very expensive since they will take the whole dash out to remove the hud. and try and fix the spring inside the hud it's self. but in order to do it yourself there are a few writen directions on the net search and you will find them. but you can get the hud out without takeing the dash apart by cutting the vent duct that goes to the drivers side vent and shoe horning it out the opening then take it apart and fix the spring inside.
I seem to recall reading another thread long ago... something about a broken plastic pin or something... allowed the display to shake & move diagonally.
I wouldn't try to repair a broken HUD. Just replace it. You can get a new one for $300 from partstaxi.com.
PCMusicGuy is right, you don't have to remove the whole dash/console. If you're willing to cut the duct, most folks report installing a new HUD in less than ~4 hours. An experienced installer can do it in 2 hours.
I installed a new HUD in my 09 C6 1LT. Replacing an existing HUD should be easier because you don't have to do the wiring.
