I use the engine sound to determine when to shift. I kind of have a feel for it. I dont worry about over revving since the C6 has a rev limiter to stop the engine from blowing if I forget to shift in time.
I guess the light is a cool tool to use also, just my .02 cents.

If you are just street driving a shift light probably is for cool effect. Once you are racing you need the shift light for various reasons.
In the 1/4 mile it is much more accurate to shift based off the shift light versus engine sound or a lagging tach.
For RR you have a shift light to help you decide what to do next. My shift light is set with room to go. If the light comes on and if I only have a few hundred feet to go before a braking zone I will probably not shift, but if I have 100 yards I would probably shift. It is also a good indicator to show if your track speeds are increasing. At various tracks I try to get the shift light to come on sooner coming out of a turn which means I either was on the gas sooner or carrier more speed through the turn. For me it is a helpful tool.
