I just had Corsa Sports Exhaust installed on my 2007 A6 C6 and noticed the coolant temperature was high around town at 235 degrees. Do you think this is a problem or could be caused by me being in 1st and 2nd gear too much to hear the exhaust scream?
Those underhood temps are probably a lot higher than normal (assuming that the headers arent coated). Hanging out in first and second isnt helping either. However, i would definitly check to make sure the radiator isnt blocked with anything.
If the problem still persists, and it isnt a coolant system issue, i would go to a 160 thermostat and if at all possible, get the car tuned. Not only will it perform better, but during the tune, the fans can be calibrated to come on sooner and stronger.
I had actually used a bottle of that redline water wetter in my 88 coupe and it seemed to help a bit. dropped the average temp by about 5 degrees. Good Luck!!!!

hmm probley your driving style. dont drive like that and see if it goes back to normal.
you can do this..
drain the radiator, then fill it back up with distilled water and a bottle of WW. there still will be coolant in the system, so it end up around 80/20, water/coolant, just estimating,
try that.. but in CT it get pretty cold, so you'll need to drain the radiator in winter and then add 50/50 premix dexcool and bring it back up to a 50/50 mix.

p.s. leave the cap off the reservoir and start the car, when i starts to get hot, keep adding the fluid untill its at full operating temp,, put cap back on,, go around the block goto about 4k a couple times, then come back and check the coolant reservoir, top off as required.
Based on your original post I am assuming you have just a Corsa rear section exhaust, correct?
If that is the case then you're running on a stock tune and fan setting therefore those temps would be normal in traffic/ slow moving conditions.
I wouldnt start draining and refilling that fluid since it is common for a stock tuned C6 to reach those temps.
My tuned H/C C6 sees 201-208 while sitting in 90-100 deg humid Atlanta traffic. Thats with a vented hood as well. Once rolling the vented hood keeps the temps in the 174-180 range.
yeah Roadkill, we need more info. Cat back exhaust only? what were the outside temps? Waht was the driving like? Stop and go in first and second only? Freeway? A/C on? Paddle mode or normal shifts?
OK, I am going out on a limb here but I swear that my 01 went from summer time 200 plus to 180s after I put a BBK Ceramic shorty on it. Don't know if it really was the shorty or not but I did see a decrease in the engine temp and oil temp.... Take it for what it is worth...CAPPO
It is just the catbacks. It was only about 80 outside. I will drive normal tomorrow without keeping it in low gears and see what happens. Thanks for all your help. I'll try the simplest thing first.
yeah if you are playing and reving up and down in town in the first three gears and it is in the 80's, your temps are reasonable. Try just normal driving with traffic and see what temps you get. Make sure you have wayer in the res tank then take on the freeway for a drive. I am guessing that your temps will be 220 or less in traffic and 210ish or less on the freeway. Do this with the A/C OFF!

Hmmm....around town, reving in 1 and 2 with 235, yep its you!
More rpm's = more heat being generated..
In town with limited air flow = less heat being extacted from radiator..
Listening to exhaust screaming in town and not at track just means that Forrest Gump is a genius compared to some....
Simply dropping a 35 degree lower temp (160degree) thermostat in your engine will make the EM computer think that the coolant is not sufficiently warm. It will most likely enrich your fuel/air mixture and that will both hurt your efficiency and cause some additional carbon build up. Change your 195 thermostat with a new one or a 190. They are not super accurate to begin with and can go bad at any time. Vary your driving style and see what happens.
