What is the ratio on the standard auto 4 speed 2005 corvette gears ? Would it be a good idea to go for a higher ratio to get some decent power increase in a low budget ?
My early-year plan was to go Lingenfelter supercharger, but the economical situation affecting my business says differently, so I'm thinking of doing some cheaper mods instead.
So what do you think. A decent cold air induction and a higher gears ? What ratio for the 4 automatic ? Don't want to change the exhaust as a decent one would again settle at around 1.5k
If you have the z51 package you will have 315 gears,if not you have 273 gears. If you are going to change the gears go with 373 and a 3200 or 3600 stall.
2.73 ? Wow ! I didn't expect it to be THAT low tbh Wouldn't a jump to 3.7 or 3.90 be too harsh ? How will it affect the top speed and what hp gain would you expect from such a change ?
The car is stock, except the previous owner removed the cats.
I would go with 3.90. Your top speed would be effected very little if any. Gear changes wont add HP but it will make it seem like you gained a ton. It pretty much makes your RPM higher in all gears thus putting you in your powerband faster.
Well, you said low budget...
See if you can find a used 3.42 from C5/C6 with factory stall
Thats what I have...no complains!
Plus...add a
Vararam Intake and Headers...or
Vararam with a Cat Back System to wake things up with the 3.42 on a budget.
Good Luck and trust me, it will never end.

Hmm, it's true I'm a blind folk when it comes to car mechanics, but please exaplain to me, may be I'm misunderstanding. Sure it wont change the HP on the engine, but since the transmission ratio is changed, the actual torque transferred to the wheels will be higher at the cost of top speed. Something like the low gears on the offroad vehicles - tons of power, but you can only go as fast as 20-30 mph.

Actually that's a good idea, I think I even saw someone selling a 3.43 off of a C6 here in one of the local subforums, it could be a good deal.
But please, tell me about the hp on the wheels and the topspeed effect Not that I ever drive that fast, in fact I'm still to try and see what the top speed is, but yeah it'd suck just knowing that my car would only do let's say 250 km/h when it did 290-300 km/h before.
Well when I had a 06 mustang 5 speed auto I thought it would lower my top speed but when I went from 3.14 or somthing to 4.10 I acully didnt loose any top speed at all I wish some one elese could chime in on this. I also have the A4 and im going to go with 3.90 I mean how often do you top your car off anyways?

Well, there is one other chance for someone with a non Z51 2005 C6 automatic to still have the 3.15 gears...it was also a freestanding option as well as part of that Z51 package.
Check your build sheet (a white sticker with code numbers on it in the glove box or center box I believe?) and see if it says GU2 (2.73s) or G90 (3.15s).
I had the 3.15 performance axle package on my base suspension '05 A4 vert. Wasn't enough. I went with 3.73 and a 3200 stall (flashes to 3600) and got what I wanted.
IMO 3.90 is too much for street driving. My buddy has an '05 w/ 3.90 and all I hear are those gears winding all the time.
BTW - I also swapped out the OEM A4 trany for a built A4.
The 3.42 diff out of a 2005 manual will bolt right up to your 2005 auto. Just get the computer changed and you're good to go!
I would recommend the 3.42's also if you are on a budget. I went from 3.23's to 3.73's in my 97 Trans Am WS6 and the difference was amazing! Then you can send the computer off to like Speedinc or some other company to tune your computer for the gears, t-stat, stall or whatever and it would cost ~$125-$175. Not too bad

Give Chuck CoW (vendor here) a call and ask him. He has two seperate gear packages and will likely talk you into a tune as well. For those who have done this, they speak highly of him, his abilities and the results....
That will be the next mod I do for the wife's 05 A4.....
Okay, all the people here with upgraded gears, someone sell me a 3.42 cheap please
And again, what happens to the milage and top speed when upping from 2.7 to 3.4 ?
I went from 3.15's to 3.42 in my a-4 and it's worked out very well.. A bit more low end pull and an insignificant milege drop, maybe 1mpg.. I also went for a ride in an a-4 with 3.90 gears and for me that was way over the top for sreet driving.. If you go from the stock 2.73 gear set to 3.42's I'm sure you'll be impressed, it will be a very noticable difference. good luck with your choice
