Before you run out and buy gears, find someone with a 3200 - 3600 stall in the car and go for a test drive. You'd be surprised how hard you can launch the car with a good stall. It also keeps the car from falling flat on the 1-2 upshift so it helps from a roll too.
What is the ratio on the standard auto 4 speed 2005 corvette gears ? Would it be a good idea to go for a higher ratio to get some decent power increase in a low budget ?
My early-year plan was to go Lingenfelter supercharger, but the economical situation affecting my business says differently, so I'm thinking of doing some cheaper mods instead.
So what do you think. A decent cold air induction and a higher gears ? What ratio for the 4 automatic ? Don't want to change the exhaust as a decent one would again settle at around 1.5k
Thanks for your advice
I went from 2.73's to 3.73's in an A4 Z28 years ago, favorite mod on that car. If you care to go the math , you will find the ratios in your A4
are perfect for 3.73's.

I had them too. The C6 tire diameter is larger than the Z28, so 3.90s in a vette are pretty even with 3.73s in the F-body.
So why is it that GM didn't go with higher gears from the factory? Is it because of all the other upgrades that would have to go into stabelizing the higher gears, like all the upgrades on the Z51?
BTW this is a great thread. Thanks for starting it and to all who have added info to it. Its has helped my insight greatly on this mod.

Mostly because of fuel economy and noise restriction (numerically higher gears = higher RPMs = louder across the board) reasons. Emissions/clean air play a role in there as well I'm sure.

Chuck, I'd love to, but I'm in the EU. Not many garages here tune or know anything about Corvettes.
NO PROBLEM!
Lately, I've been selling the EFI LIVE tuning package I use to customers outside of my area or outside of the country so that they can take advantage of my mail order tuning.
With this tuning package, I can remote tune just about anything you might have.
We can e-mail the tunes back and forth to get you running right with your mods.
When you have 2.73, on top speed your engine will be on the limite of power. When you put 3.42, on same high speed your engine will turn with more RPM. So the top speed have to be same or a little less than before.
Maybe I'm wrong but always was the same when changing the diffs. (not on Vettes but any car it's same)
After all lets see if Tutin will work on the C6 Vette or will spend some USD for an oldtimer!
Well, there is one other chance for someone with a non Z51 2005 C6 automatic to still have the 3.15 gears...it was also a freestanding option as well as part of that Z51 package.
Check your build sheet (a white sticker with code numbers on it in the glove box or center box I believe?) and see if it says GU2 (2.73s) or G90 (3.15s).
EGGZactly.
I have an '05 base model with no Z51... but I DO have the 3.15 gears.
Found that out by checking the RPO codes in the glovebox.
most likely your top speed is DRAG limited.. Not enough power to over come the vehicle drag(wind, rolling resistance, yada yada yada) I would say, having said that, that you could possibly even increase your top speed because at the same mph(lets say 175.... IDK what it is) you will be shifting your RPM higher in the power band.
Your Vette will reach the top speed on the 4th gear, on the 6 gears models the top speed can be reach in 5th gear. As you see the tranny ratio it's almost the same. Top speed the RPM in your car will be no much higher than before and the top speed will be maybe same or little less. As stranger 383 says the Drag it's the factor to the top speed limit. The DRAG and the POWER are like TOM and Jerry... always fighting. But as you know in Bulgaria the places to drive with top speed are 4 or 5 and maybe will be not a problem if you can't reach it.
