You might try taking the dipstick out and setting it aside for 5 - 20 minutes and maybe the oil in the tube will settle back down into the pan. Then if you put the wiped off dipstick in, you might get one well defined reading before the tube gets all oiled up again.

Change the oil. Add amount that manual says to add. Reset Engine Oil Life computer in DIC. Drive it until either it is time to change the oil again or until you get the Check Oil Level message on the DIC. Don't lose a lot of sleep over it.

No problem with my 05. It's not as good as some I've seen but it works OK for me.

Is there much of a difference in reading between 15-30 minutes after driving and overnight?

Are you actually saying that there is no need to check your oil level on a semi-regular basis?

Actually he is! Most high end cars today don't even have a dipstick. Since I also own a BMW I can positively say that they don't have a dipstick nor a transmission fluid stick.

I do drink exessively! I can't help that. I'm Irish.

I'm going to do an oil change this weekend, if I can sober up. Then I'll see if it is overfilled. I was able to read it when new. I had my first oil change done with about 1,500 miles on it. Maybe that is the problem.

Well, I was kind of serious and kind of playing around. I have been checking dipsticks since about 1965 spending lots of my younger years at a service station. Also, for about the last 9 or 10 years I drove LS1's and they used a bit of oil so you had to watch it. This vette I have now seems to not use much oil but I do check it from time to time
As to the original question from this thread, my dipstick is somewhat easy to read but I have seen some that are pretty tricky. They can be aggravating.

When we changed our headers the hardest part of the job was finding the dip stick hole.

They could never make a ls motor with no dip stick and still put Mobil-1 in it!
Of course I don't use it or use oil!

But with some practice and consistency it becomes fairly easy to know the level!! But it is not as easy as lets say my 07 Altima..

Default sandpaper the stick

take some fine sandpaper or sandpaper sponge and run across dipstick. sanding at a 90 degree angle was more effective than sanding up and down the stick. just carefully clean sandpaper grit and very small metal debri off stick before inserting. i do this with most of my engines, helps alot.

This may be a noob question but if there's a DIC Oil Life display, why even bother with the dip stick ? I am asking because i recently purchased an 06 Z06.
thanks in advance,
G

The point of reading the dipstick is to see if you are burning or dripping oil. Then you need to add some. The oil life monitor is some calculation that tries to predict if the oil is still good and clean. It doesn't know if it's been burning or leaking and needs to be topped off.
