Default An itch for headers

Ok- I purchased my 08 Z51 coupe two years ago thinking that it was plenty fast enough and the dual mode exhaust sounded just fine......however I am now getting the itch for a little better sound and more performance and am thinking about a set of headers.

My question is if anyone knows of a header/cat combination that can be used on an LS3 that will not require a tune (warranty concerns- I will take my chance with the headers but they will never accept the tune).

Any thoughts?

Dan

You don't nessecarily have to have the car tuned for the headers. But you will get SES codes for your rear 02 sensors because the cats are being moved and they are usually a high flow cat. If you can find 02 simulators for the rears the code will go away but otherwise you would need a tuner to go through the computer and delete the rear 02 sensors so they don't throw that code.

But need to add.......if you can live with always having a check engine light (CEL) on and you don't have emissions testings in your state, you won't have to have the O2 sensor "tuned" out. But you will fail emissions testing if your 02 sensor is throwing a code.

I'm not trying to discourage you from getting headers. That said, even if you don't fail an emissions test based on a thrown code or excessive emissions on a sniffer test, you may very likely fail based on a visual inspection. Removing OEM cats...even using relocated 2-stage cats are enough to fail the emissions test. The person just might know what he's looking at.

Even if some of these "bored" minimum wage kids knew or cared what they were looking for, do you think they would even know the original location of the cats of every vehicle on the road? As long as he/she sees a cat (or just looks like a cat) visually, then it's a go.

I agree. I've NEVER heard of someone failing emissions with headers as long as they had high flow cats installed.

I would tend to agree but even if they see cats and think cool, the sight of the long tube collectors is kind of a give-away to almost anyone I think. I mean they just don't remotely look like the same exhaust stuff they've been looking at all day. MY other concern is that mine are sterling coated and that is probably going to hurt come visual inspection time. I hope not but I'm guessing so

You can try the sparkplug anti fouler trick,do a search.
they are the same size as the o2 sensors and they move the o2 sensors out of the exhaust stream about 1"-1.5" to fool your ecu.Did this trick on my evo with hiflo cats and it worked great.

You HAVE to scratch that itch!

I have LG Pros on my 06 and they sounded good, plus the car picked up 26 rwhp and 39 rwtq (and that was without a tune).

But when I added the NPP it sounds GREAT! It will be the best mod you can do. And don't get too hung up on the headers. Kooks, ARH, or LG's are fine as long as they have the merge collectors.
