Make a notch in the piston with a dremel or similar tool so that you can get a pick in the groove and pop it out. Interestingly enough the service manual shows this notch, LOL. I guess they forgot about it in the casting.

Rotate the retainer until the gaps are positioned in the cutout area. Then use a pic or pocket screwdriver to push the ring end towards the piston pin and scroll around the retainer, an L shaped pick works best.
