I swear I read where someone else here on the forums had a very similar problem. Heat from the cutouts weakened the spring which then eventually failed.
Instead of capping them why not use turn-downs like Joe G suggested?
i bought ur old xpipe and i check it out it looked like tha old cut outs were pointed down alot more then the ones u have now but to make sure this doesnt happen to me ima get cut off tips that point down thanks for the info tho wen ever anythin goes wrong wit your vette u allways gota upgrade thats what i do hehehe
I'm not sure what those "cut outs" are intended to achieve. If for some reason you want loud, just scoop out the insides of the muffler. There are (several) good reasons exhaust systems don't terminate underneath cars.
In the C3 world, we have to be very careful that we're not routing our exhaust too close to the leaf springs in back, that'll cause spring failure as well. I'm not surprised at all that this happened, you had a very hot leaf blower blowing on that spring for quite some time.

check my previous post for the reason for cutouts - sound. I like the quiet stock mufflers 99% of the time, but when I want loud, like on the track, I want LOUD! Plus I have fun with ricers "blowing their noses at me" on the street...for some reason lots of little turbo cars here in Miami wanna run me...until I open those cutouts.
Since my convertible top is down 99% of the time, I've got unlimited fresh air...and for the 11 seconds the top's up for a drag strip run, I'm not worried about carbon monoxide. Actually the exhaust doesn't seem to come in the car...but I very seldom have the top up so my car's not a good example.
I would have gotten the NPP's or Z06 muffs, but they don't work with a trailer hitch which I need to pull a trailer with track tires. So cutouts were a good option for me and have been reliable and fun for 2.5 years now. If you don't need a trailer NPP's or Z06 muffs are good option.
Do the springs swap in/out with no special tools required? I have my set of new Z06 springs in the garage but don't want to bust into the car to find out that some kind of leaf spring compression tool is needed.
Swapping the springs require only hand tools, jack & jack stands. Took me about 15 mins to remove the rear. Should take just about the same for install.

I guess I should have looked for more details before this project.
The 07 w/ mag ride is MUCH harder to change springs. The spring has a lot more bow in it. I had to disconnect the tie rod on one side., sway bar links, mag ride sensor link, and drop both sides to get it out.
The repalcement spring went in w/ 3" extra on each side. If you have a Z51 or Z06 this would be an easy job. It was not hard on my car but the items you have to remove goes way up.
I now have the mag ride w/ a Z06 front spring and the front and rear sways, and cooling ducts.
If you don't disconnect the stuff I stated you will bend your tie rod/ sway bar links and destroy the mag ride sensor links.
Hey guys, I'm from New Zealand, and have just discovered an issue with the front composite spring on my 2005 base model C6. It has done 196 000 km. On inspection, I've noticed the spring beginning to delaminate / split along the length direction of the spring. According to GM technical bulletins, these events do happen, and offer unacceptable reasons. I would like to know from fellow Corvette owners, if anyone else has experienced such as issue. I'm aware the spring will need to be replaced, but unless inspected, other Corvette owners could be oblivious to such issues. Any comments are welcome
