Default Goodyear Supercar question

I am nearing the time to decide on replacing the GY Supercars on my 05 Z51.

Has anybody stayed with the GY Supercars when replacing their tires, and do you have any regrets in doing so?

I'm leaning towards staying with them and would like some opinions.

Thanks,
Tom

I bought Firestone Wide Ovals and am very happy with the decision. They are runflats.

Michelin PS2's or Firestone wide ovals will treat you and your car better.

Thanks all for the replies. I was considering the Firestones and went ot the local cruise night last saturday hoping to see a C6 with them. There were about a dozen C6's and ALL had the Goodyears on them. I was suprised.

Does anybody have a picure or two of the Firestones mounted on the factory 05 rims?

Thanks,

Tom

I had planned on getting the Michelin PS2's but discovered Michelin came out with the new Pilot ZP (runflat) that they designed for the ZR1 so I ended up buying these instead. In short, they still ride like a runflat but the tire is incredible compared to my original Supercars. I've run them on the track and they give superior ride and grip over the F1 Supercar tires that my car came with but are not a cost savings (~$1,700 from TireRack). The only reason I would hesitate to buy these tires again is the cost as I'm considering trying out another more cost effective tire; if I don't like them, then I'll pony up for this now proven tire.

Good luck with your decision. Aaron

I replaced two rear tires with GY Supercars. I will probably stay with Goodyear's tires.

The Tire Rack has a lot of information about both the SC and Wide ovals. I ordered my from the Tire Rack and had them installed by a local shop. The Tire Rack will ship them directly to an installation center near you. I got them in 2 days via UPS.

My car dyno'd the last time at 428 rwhp and the Wide Ovals seem to have much better grip than the GY SC on the street and are very quiet. I am very pleased with them and the fact they cost a lot less than the GY is just a plus.

Can you give me an idea what it cost to have the RF mounted... I got a price of $50 + balancing per tire

I have to do more homework to find a place that knows how to properly mount RF and keep the price so I don't have to take out a home equity loan to get them mounted & balenced...

Thanks guys. I spent some time at Tire Rack going over all of the infor provided and the $$ tell an interesting story;

Goodyear (OEM) $1488 (for all 4tires)
Michelins $1626
Firetones $984

Big difference $ wise. Makes me lean towards the Firestones, but I can't help but wonder whey they cost so much less. Tire Rack shows that they are made in Japan, maybe that has something to do with it?

From the Firestone manual:

RFT Tire Damage and Repair

No tire, regardless of its design or quality is indestructible.

RFT tires can be ultimately rendered unusable due to a
puncture or other road hazard as well as from improper
run-flat or low tire pressure operation. Some punctures
may be repaired under certain restrictions and prescribed
procedures.

When driven at or with low pressure, factors affecting
reparability include vehicle speed, load, and maneuvering;
the amount of inflation pressure loss; and ambient temperature.

In any situation, the extent and location of direct
damage from a puncturing object or other road hazard are
also critical factors.

RFT tires are not repairable in any of the following situations:

• If the tire was operated with inflation pressure less than
15 psi (100 kPa).

• Abrasion or other damage is present on the exterior tread,
sidewall or bead areas.

• Abrasion, wrinkling, or separation is present on the tire
interior.

• Any condition or damage is present that disqualifies
repair of a conventional tire.

Run-Flat Certified Retailers will fully inspect your tire,
inside and out, to determine if the tire can be repaired. Tire
damage is not always visible from the outside and the tire
must be removed from the wheel for a complete inspection.

For more information, see “Tire Repairs” in this manual.

Note: Some vehicle manufacturers do not recommend
using repaired tires. Consult your vehicle owner’s manual
or contact the vehicle manufacturer before operating a
repaired tire on your vehicle.

Around here, Discount Tire seems to know what they are doing but I know it can vary quite a bit by region.

I have a theory that Goodyear makes zero or loss on new car tires especially the Corvette. I think Goodyear would give GM the Corvette tires for free just to have them on the car to promote the brand. So they have to increase the prices for the replacement tires to make up for the loss.

Like I said earlier, I like the Wide Ovals much better than the GY and the fact they cost less is just a plus. Go read the Tire Rack reviews and almost everyone rated the Wide Ovals higher that GY. I only got 14,000 miles out of the GY SC tires which in my mind is ridiculous considering I don't track my car or drive it hard.

Does anyone have a legitimate complaint against the Wide Ovals? I understand the Michelins may have slightly performance but at the time I bought the Wide Ovals, they did not offer the run-flat type.

I replaced my '05 Z51 tires at 11K miles with FS tires.
And they now have 10K miles on them, and they still look new!

I replaced my Goodyear Supercar tires with the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-2 EMT and was very happy with them. After that set I had a set of Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval installed on the car and like them, but I will go back to the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-2 because they feel better is turns I think "maybe they have a stiffer side wall".

I replaced the standard goodyears (not supercar) on my 06 with the firestones (run flats) and like them better than the OEM tires and the supercar goodyears on my 08 Z51. I replaced the 06 ones when I lost a rear to a road hazard comming back from Vette Magic in June. I made it from Stockton CA to San Mateo (probably 65 miles) on the OEM run flats with zero air in them at 52mph (cruse control) with no problem at all on a Sunday night... I had planned on putting non run flats on but after that experience and thinking of a 65 mile flat bed ride home and the cost of that I went with the Firestone run flats and am not sorry... I autocrossed them a few weeks ago and they held the road just fine and ride quieter and smoother than the goodyears. Oh and they cost less... got them from Tire Rack for about $1050 delivered for a set of 4 and then $112 to mount and balance.

First, you have to decide if you are staying with runflats, or going to non-runflats. This is a heated discussion.

My car came with the Goodyear Supercars and I even tried a set of F1 GS-2 Goodyears. Both rode like a truck and were very noisy on concrete freeways and the short mileage of the Supercar is unaceptable.
Then I tried the Michelin PS2 non runflat. Wow, what a tire! They handle better, much better traction, and they ride like a dream. They are even quiet on the freeway.
These tires completely transformed a Z51 into a softer ride than a base suspension car.
If you are skeptical (I was), buy a used pair on eBay and try them out.
