well it depends on what you are wanting to do and if you have the stock c6 or z51 tranny. the z51 has lower gears in 1-4 so the 456 gears would be crazy low. and with stock tire size that would be a low top speed and trap speed just my opinon though
You don't want 4:56's. You would never use first gear. I have 4:10's and I'm shifting to second immediately. I can actually take off in third on the flats.

I had RPM Stage 3 4.10 installed about 3 months ago and finally couldnt take it any more. I am now over 700 at the wheels and was shifting every blink of the eye. It was quick! But just no fun, I ended up going to 3.73 and loving them. I still have my 9 second car but able to relax a bit on the shifting dept.

It appears from what im seeing is 4.10's are ideal for most cars up to around 450 RWHP and 390's if its a m6 z51 where the first gear would be too low with the 4.10's. There was an interesting debate with c6DVL who
had 4.10 in his z51 and later dropped to 390's and his car went 10.x at
around 132 MPH. I have 4.10's and I love them having a regular c6m6 with
450 RWHP. If I want to gear slightly higher I could always use a taller tire.

The faster a car is the sooner you have to shift. A 9 sec car would have all shifts done in the first 7 seconds.
That said gears are chosen by trap speed and since just about any C6 with a strong head cam package and the rest of the bolt-ons would run a 128 trap speed, the 3.90 gear set would allow that. For the guy that is just doing bolt-ons, the 4.10 gear set is the way to go. I therefore agree with your 450rwhp cut-off from 4.10's to 3.90's.
Onto the C6DVL case, his car was running a slipping stock clutch with 500rwhp and dead drag radials. His 128 trap speed was on the border for which gear set would work. His drop from 11.8 at 128 to 10.8 at 128 was do to a textrailia clutch and a drag pack giving up the dead BFG's. His 10.8 run wasnt due to going from 4.10's to 3.90's and his complaints of hitting the rev limiter was from tires spinning. There will be a slight increase in ET going from 4.10's to 3.90's since you are losing the 5% gearing advantage which doesnt help you if you run out of rpm at the top of fourth gear in the 1/4. Why is it a mandatory thing for Ed? If you watch his You-Tube videos you will see why.....he drives at 130mph in traffic weaving in and out of 65mph cars. 4th gear is his gear.
I have a head cam car too but with 16psi from a 2200 blower, nitrous and 4.10's on a Z51. You couldnt pry them from my dead fingers. This isnt a drag car but rather a 0-100 street sleeper with plenty of traction. I shift very often as you would with any fast car. To each his own. People thinking gears make you shift without a gain are wrong. Those who think they just give you wheel spin need to rethink their power level or tire choice. I am well over 700 at the wheels and stick the power.
My recomendation is to go drive a car with the gear set of your choice and dont get the wrong info from people who are OCD compelled to not see a certain rpm for a given speed. A loud exhaust with steep gears makes you think your car isnt going anywhere with all the noise it makes at higher engine rpm's.

A6 cars running around with 3.42's have the equivalent of a 6.xx first gear in their car compared to manual cars and they dont complain of having a useless 1st gear.
The Z51 with 4.10's (my car) has the equivalent of 4.60's on a Z06 or C6 base car without z51 gearing in the trans. Mid 2-second 0-60's are the result but then it using 1st and 2nd gear up in less than 3 seconds....that simply means your car is fast. I never start in 2nd gear. 1st is really fun and yes its over pretty quick.
Guys going from 3.42's to 3.73's often say they cant feel much of a differnece and 4.10's to 4.56's is also a 10% change. Why isnt it an option? It would limit trap speeds in 4th gear to 114 or so.
I had 488's in my Big Block Camaro, with a Muncie 4 speed.
With two extra grears free in the C6, I thought maybe it would smooth things out a little
Then again, I never used the freeway much in that Camaro
Experience is the key. You had them and saw the advantage as many would if they drove a car with a gearng that the calculator says is too steep. I had 6.13's in my 9 sec Dart that crossed the traps at 10k rpms.

Agree 100% - This is why I choose 3.73's - I was running through all my gears as fast as I could hit um.
I would make every effort to drive a car with your desired gears before you go out and have them installed with your specific intentions such as a 1/4 mile runner, road racing, AutoX, or whatever.
I am more interested in Road Racing so I geared appropriate based on several of the best (GT3, GT2, ACR) and averaged it out - 3.73 was the result.[/B]
Headers, Intake, and exhaust is about as far as I want to go for now.
I tossed 456 out there having owned 488's in a Early BB Camaro with a 4-speed.
There is something about power shifting through three gears, while the guy next to you is looking at your taillights and still still trying to bring up his RPM's in first!
