Have about 1/2" of "play" in the steering wheel of 2005 coupe. Performance mechanic checked it out and states the rack needs to be replaced. He should receive the new rack early next week. Any experience with this problem? Anything else I should look for? Bought the car used about 2 months ago and am just getting around to having this fixed.

Was the engine running or not when the mechanic checked for play??? Were the wheels on the ground or in the air? Are you having any problems with the way the car drives like "wandering"? I think I would get a second opinion before authorizing this costly repair.
Car was running, wheels on the ground. Alignment seems really good. Not sure what you mean by wandering, but when driving, we are all continually making small, imperceptible changes to left and right. With this car, the movement of the wheel for these small changes is far from imperceptible. Possibly I understated the "play" in the steering in my previous post. It definitely is not a sports car feel.
Should be getting the new rack installed early this week. Will post results.
Had a simular problem with my '05. Turned out to be steering column lower pinch bolt was not properly tightened. Tightened to 25 ft/lbs, five minutes, problem fixed.

N2Flying, thank you so much for your reply. I tightened the pinch bolt and most of the "play" is gone. Will have my mechanic check again next time it is in for service. You seem to have saved me the expense of a new rack, not to mention we were having a heck of a time finding one.
glass slipper, your advice about getting a second opinion was also right on the money. It just so happens that second opinion came from this forum. What an awesome site!
