I really have no problem with my stock shifter and wonder why if this MGW is so great why GM doesn't install their own short shifter? I drove a friend's Z w/ the MGW and found it to be way too stiff IMHO. Who knows, knowing me I'll probably change my mind a year from now and throw it in. Right now I'm not sold on it.
I thought my stock shifter was fine too, but I really wanted something that was precise, firm, and felt really strong. It is so hard to describe, it makes the car feel like a true race car. That is the best way I can describe it. While the stock shifter works well, it is a POS in comparison. The quality of the MGW is second to none, and just the feel of it makes the car feel that much more sporty. Big time improvement between shifts also!
I like the stiff MGW. The stock shifter has lots of slop and you can make a 2" circle with the shift **** when its in gear. Its too easy to miss a shift with the stocker.
anyone know if a c5 mgw will fit an 09... buddy just upgraded to c6 z06 and has an mgw short throw he will sell to me... thanks
The only difference is that the C5 version fits a threaded ****. Even that can be changed by ordering the part to support the C6 style **** from MGW. Just call George at MGW.

I've had both, not MGW but B&H on my 05. Mainly, for me, it's about throw. The 05 was soo long, I kept shutting the A/C off hitting third. I pulled the rubber grommets out and used the replacement metal grommets with the B&H and it was tight, precise and short. I think it's really the replacement metal grommets that really tightens the assembly up. So it was a big improvement but with my 8-Ball **** it rattled bad at full power. Loved the look of the old 8-Ball, but put the stock **** back on and it's was completely silent. It was then that I realized how good the stock **** was after driving with the 8-Ball for a few months. Very ergonomically designed. Very easy on the hand.
Now, my 09 has the smoother shifting transmission and GM shortened up the throw of the stock shifter. It's not as precise but it's softer. But this transmission is so easy to shift. It's just straight back for second and straight forward with the palm of your hand with no side pressure to third and straight back for 4th. It's just like the first 4 speed Hurst shifters in the 60's. The stock shifter is more than precise enough to do that. Even a caveman could do it. So, personally, I don't see the need to change it out. I like the softer feel. And it's silent.

I missed 3rd on the stock shifter, the MGW cured that. It will be somewhat stiff at first, after a few hundred shifts, it is like butter..
GM went to their own version of a "short throw" shifter with the '08 model run. It was better than previous shifters but 3rd party vendors went one better. You have options if you're in the market for a better shifter. I went with the Callaway short-throw shifter after getting a test drive in a Callaway Corvette several months ago. The build quality is much better and the throws are shorter. The stock '08 shifter in on the right. I also replaced the stock shift ****.

That shifter looks slightly beefier than stock. The MGW shifter is in a different league IMHO, although I have not had first-hand experience with both. If anyone has posted that they feel a shifter is better than the MGW I sure haven't seen it. Anyone?
The MGW loosens up a bit after a few weeks and there really is no comparison between it and the OEM as far as construction, materials, etc. I don't know about other aftermarket shifters, but the MGW is in a completely different class from stock.

Maybe the engineers were busy fixing the design problems with the roofs delaminating, the harmonic balancers falling off, the fuel system level sensing issues, the 2005's that wont start, the steering wheel that locks from the solenoid engaging while you're driving, the differential fractures on stock 2005's, the fact this thing wont go into 1st gear or resists going into reverse, the oil ingestion, or the active handling issues from the connector in the steering column.
No car comes with the top of the line parts compared to aftermarket parts. The simplest changes improve the car's power and performance for all cars. Why is borla or corsa in business if the stock exhaust is so good. Why is comp cams in business if the car comes with the best camshaft?
From air cleaners to shifters, GM doesnt do it best.
