Anyone have any links to swapping an alternator on a LS2. I haven't started yet, it looks simple enough, but I like to have instructions close by just in case. Also if anyone has helpful tips I greatly appreciate.
I am going to install tomorrow hopefully. A DC 275amp should be a huge increase.
Before you do anything else, DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE AND MOVE IT AWAY FROM THE BATTERY!!
Probably the hardest part will be releasing tension on the belt! It's spring loaded and needs to be rotated to give you enough slack to slip it over the alternator pulley. It's down low and there isn't a lot of room. You could use an appropriately sized wrench (straight long arm box end would be best) but it is a potential knuckle buster. A belt tensioner tool would work great here. It's an extra long arm with replaceable low profile sockets on the end that keeps your hand at a safe distance and gives you a lot of leverage.
Once the belt is off the pulley (leave it on all the others unless you're replacing it) the rest is easy. It's just a matter of disconnecting the large charging wire and regulator plug from the back of the alternator and removing the upper and lower mounting bolts. There may be a sleeve at one of the mounting bolts that could hold the alternator tight. It just needs to be moved back in the bracket by rocking the alternator.
Installation is reverse of the removal procedure.
While I haven't actually removed one on a C6, I just took a peek at mine. I feel very confident passing this advise on to you. Good luck!
If you take 5 minutes to wash your hands afterwards...
Seriously... It is a very simple job. Just pulled mine. Getting replacement tomorrow to go back in.
of course the local GM service shop offered to to this for me for $200 on top of the $550 they wanted for the new alternator....
Let's see... $750 and I don't have to wash my hands or use my cool craftsman socket set.... OR $350 for a bosch AL8800X alternator from Napa and 10 minutes of getting my hands dirty.....
The tensioner can be moved inward by putting a box end wrench or socket on the head of the pulley bolt, it will move without too much effort. As long as you don't let the belt fall off of other pulleys (especially the lower ones where you can't reach or see) it will be a simple job. I agree with disconnecting the battery just in case you ground the wrench or cable on something. You may need a big flat screwdriver or similar tool to pry the alternator out of the bracket once the bolts are removed.

Yup, fairly simple and not worth going to the dealer for this work. You'll save a ton of cash by doing it yourself. Pay attention to how the belt wraps around (belt path) the various pulleys. If you don't see a belt diagram under the hood somewhere just make a quick drawing so you remember how it goes on again. While you have the belt off check it for cracks. Might be a good time to replace the belt as well.
Forgot to mention... When you get the belt back on, check EVERY pulley very closely with the flash light to make sure the belt wraps properly, meaning centered and in the grooves. It's quite easy to have the belt slip to the side a rib or two and and hang out over the inside or outside of one of the pulleys. It won't take long for the belt to shred after start up if it's not reinstalled properly.
