Some folks over exaggerate, I'm running with no cats for 2 years now, no bad smell, nobody behind me complaining, If anything, people are always on my tail for some reason, I'm not sure if they are admiring the car or they really like the sound of my bullets, but nobody is fighting to stay away from me. I have no complaints whatsoever.
I agree. Absolutely no smell coming from my car with a year not having cats now.
I have had a handful of others confirm that my nose wasn't just not working properly They removed cats on their car and said it smelled like gas driving around, but couldn't even tell I had mine removed.
Maybe it's in the tuning.
I also have no discoloration.
More power and more sound are hard to complain about
I have no smell with out cats but I don't have a cam or heads.
What I do have is more power, less tunnel heat, better sound, didn't have to run the O2 extenders down the tunnel and I saved the $ 300 or $400 to buy the cats.
As far as more pollution well I just fart less plus Obama's plans to make the world a cleaner, greener place will more than make up for my little increase.
- Yes, it does stink, but I do not notice it in the car. Behind my car, my eyes water so bad, I can't take it . I could care less about other drivers behind me...drive faster if you don't like it.
- There is no testing down here in SE Texas, so I am not too worried about the environmental implications.
- There is no signs at all of any discoloration to the rear fascia.
- The issues associated with plugging cats in a SC engine worries me more than the other trivial disadvantages listed above. In the past, I have had bad valve seals that have caused lots of smoke that would have plugged cats. Luckily, they were not on there.
For what it's worth I don't think you get a guarantee of "no stink" with a cat'd system. My car was virtually odorless when new. When I added headers with high flow cats I picked up some exhaust smell even with a re-tune and correct AFR verified by my wideband o2. When I added the cam the smell increased even more even after another re-tune and the proper 14.7-ish to 1 AFR.
I think the fact is that the aftermarket high flow cats just simply are not as efficient as the OEM stuff and there should be some expectation of increased odor if you change the configuration whether you choose cat'd or cat-less.
Honestly, I feel guilty for the stinch my car puts out with hi-flow cats..

If people are constantly on your tail it is sign that you drive too slow. We'll be sending someone over to haul away your vette and remove your man card.

If anything I drive too fast, I get a ticket a month to prove it.
I don't have heads or cam, but am thinking of getting a nice cam down the road.
Maybe it's in the tuning, because unless you bend over and specifically smell my exhaust, you would not be able to tell that I'm catless. I'm running American Racing headers, with the Billy Boat Bullets and a tune from Breathless Performance.

Exact same for me. I have ZERO odor (verified by my g/f) and it sounds awesome. Kooks headers Corsa Exhaust.
had no choice but to go with no cats. I'm not running a ton of boost. I don't know what the issue was. At 6000 miles, one of my cats came apart inside and clogged things up causing me to pop a head. I don't run cats now and would be willing to bet I don't put out any more pollutant than anyone else. I have actually tested it in Denver at a smog station. Mine doesn't smell till I put the pedal down.
And some over exaggerate and just don't want to admit the odor is present. BTW...just how do you know the drivers behind you aren't complaining and cursing you the whole way?? There is absolutely nothing to gain with the offroad x-pipe other than sound volume. It's common sense, if you don't have cats you're going to stink. A lot of us have been there and went back to high flow cats for a reason.
There is a whole discussion on why our cars stink sometimes when we slightly lay into it in this forum. I wondered why it smells like sulfur or rotten eggs and most tell me it is because of the cats. Are they all wrong? Is it going to smell like a diesel truck without cats, that bad? I'm just curious, not going to do it because I follow the law. Can you describe the bad smell without cats, is it like rotten eggs and sulfur like mine or does it get rid of that nasty smell? Here it is : http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-t...under-wot.html
The high flow cats will still pass Cali smog testing?
No. Federal regulations call for the Original Cats in the Original location, no exceptions. No headers with or without cats will pass. No headers are CARB exempt.

The visual inspection will fail you first & even if the inspector is "blind", with LT's or OEM headers high flow cats won't pass the sniffer.
High flow cats on my other car (Magnaflow X-pipe mid-pipe w/ cats) netted 15 rwhp w/ no other changes & that's with OEM headers. What I (we) do here in CA is keep the OEM mid-pipe in the garage & every two (2) years install it for the sniffer test then reinstall the aftermarket mid-pipe until your time is up again in another 2 years.
