Default What is "Normal" for the DIC to read?

I have an 05 Automatic...I drag race it almost every weekend during racing season (March-Nov) I have a switch to run the fan when the motor is off to cool the engine between runs...

My OEM battery had not given me any problems, but AFTER I installed the switch to run the fan, I thought being my battery was 3 yrs old (at the time) I'd get a new one.. I got the (Optima Yellow Top Mod 34)

Since I got it, my DIC reads 14.5 volts all the time... with the OEM battery it would start reading 14.5 then eventually go to 14.1 volts

When the car sits more than a week I put the battery Tender on so it should be fully charged...

I'm just wondering if it should read that high 14.5 even after its been on a Battery Tender for a week...

After a day at the track, if I make 6-10 runs, I usually run the fan for app 10-15 min after each run with the motor OFF.. So I KNOW the battery is not fully charged after a day of racing, BUT to get home I have a 100 mile drive, & I'm pretty sure that should recharge the battery to 100% but it still reads 14.5

Ya think this normal... BTW I have NEVER had a dead battery.. I guess the saying "If it Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It" holds true...

Why would you expect it not to read higher if it was fully charged? Last time I check the voltage goes DOWN as the charge is drained, not up.

Your battery is showing a more consistent voltage without fluctation, holding a charge, I don't get what you're asking

I'm thinking if the battery is FULLY charged... there would be no need for the alternator to be putting out 14.5 volts... if the battery were 75% charged, then YES it should charge at 14.5 UNTIL the battery is at 100% THEN I would think the charge rate would go down to maybe 14.0 because the battery is at 100% and does not need more charge ?

I hope I was able to explain myself better...my thought is if the battery is NOT fully charged it will take the full 14.5 volts to get to peak charge, but once (it IS AT 100)% it would only take 14.0 or 13.8 just to "Maintain" the full charge it has...

Are you reading the battery voltage on the DIC with the engine running or off? If you are reading with the engine on, you are reading the alternator charge rate not the battery.

With engine running... next time I get in the garage I'll check it with the engine NOT runninh.... I'm guessing it should be 11.xx or in that area..

You are on the right track and the charging voltage should drop off to accomodate the system demand and would typically run at about 13.5VDC. A fully charged battery should measure 12.5vdc. As soon as you start the Car the DIC would display about 14.5VDC for a while then start
trimming back after the battery comes up to full charge.

Put an accurate volt meter on the battery terminals while the engine is running and compare to the DIC. It only matters that the true voltage at the battery is with in spec, not what the DIC says.

Good idea... I will do that and see what kind of #'s I get or how the DIC compares to the volt meter

Ok, let us know what you find out. Get a reading a couple min after starting and then another after driving for say 20 min or more.

Ahh, I gotcha. Didn't realize you meant with the alternator going.
