where is shift lock control solenoid located?

The shift interlock solenoid is located on the shifter. It is not in the trans on an 05 a4 c6. take the cover off, it's on the back side underneath and has 2 wires going to it. Start the engine, depress the brake and make sure you have power and ground to the solenoid. Sometimes they do not work because coffee and/or soda get spilled and the linkage ets sticky. Hi Mark, How difficult is the shift control to replace on an 05' Z-51 with auto transmission. Is it easier to disconnect and if so could you walk me thru the procedure. I'm sure the shift lockout solenoid is intermittently not releasing when I depress the brake pedal. More than an inconvenience at times. Any help would be greatly appreciated Tim Stengel

OK, here's a pic. Sorry for the crud, but it is from a salt water flood car.
When you push on the button on top of the shifter (yellow arrow) the lock mechanism won't allow you to unless your foot is on the brake. When you apply the brake, the solenoid pushes outward (red arrow) and the locking arm moves rearward (white arrow) unlocking the shift button allowing you to push it and move the shifter.

I know this thread is old but I have an '05 automatic with the intermittent shift lock problem. It will work fine for weeks then for a few days it will have seemingly random delays in the release of the shift lock. I've found that sometimes the shift lock engages immediately but when the problem shows up it will release if I just wait a minute or so. My brake lights work fine so I don't think it is the brake switch. Right now it is annoying but I think I read that it will only get worse. Would rather not spend $500+ to replace the entire shift mechanism. Any suggestions? Thanks...

someone had answered my question about me having same problem, however i am iusing phone to post and i cant locate who answered me. but they suggested pushing shifter forward a bit and it worked like a charm. it still is sometimes hard to get out of park, but i can always push it forward and get it in gear. sometimes it takes me a few attemtps but always works. hope this helps.

Had that same problem with mine just this week ... could not get out of park and to make it worse, doing so screwed up the shift **** so add another $125+ part to repair. Waiting for the new shift mechanism to come from dealer. What are the pros/cons of just disconnecting it? Is that for safety or theft? My '06 only has 2500 miles on it, so this bites.

Don't want to break it, would like to just disable it.

you can buy a new shifter, or you cah wire the hook latch lock up or cut it or just bend it bend it back and fourth until it snaps its just plastic, i went threw all the problems until one day nothing i tried would work, so i had to break it, and guess what, its never happened again
its never had a problem shifting again, it works perfect, its been 10.16 in the 1/4 almost 107mph in the 1/8 hung the front wheels i pull it in and out of the garage can roll it back and fourth for the lift, the staging lanes or just for fun
without getting in the car putting in acc mod running the battery dead, just like a car should

Never had a problem since.
