I recently bought my c6 z51 and ive noticed as im going from 1st to 2nd a light comes on saying 1st to 4th and it wont let me shift to 2nd unless i clutch in again to neutral and than back to 2nd. It only happens when i accelerate slowly and not when i get on the gas hard. Is this somethign I can turn off and why does it even do that?
yes, there's about a million posts on this topic. It only does it when the car is warmed up and you try to shift into second below 19 mph. If you rev it more, it won't block you out. It was put in to increase the as-tested gas mileage to avoid the gas guzzler tax.
hmm ok so theres no way to remove that, oh well. Seems like its revving really low when you go 1st to 4th. i wouldnt think thats a good thing for the engine but what do i know
Or you can just train yourself to avoid the issue. It will not force you into 4th if you are going less than 14 mph and it will not force you into 4th if you are going over 20. If you are over a certain amount of throttle you can shift to 2nd between 14 and 20. Just remember to shift to second before 14 when driving in slow traffic.
its called CAGS for computer aided gear selection, exact circumstances under which it forces you to 4th are in the owners manual and in the posts above. Many many threads on bypassing it with fairly easy electronic fixes/fuses etc.
When I first got my car it would happen sometimes, but I soon found the car, and I, both prefer a later shift to 2nd. Now it almost never happens.
This will eliminate the shift solenoid, but not the indicator on the dash (just like the link above).
I ran this way for a couple years without any issues.
Or get a tune (or buy your own HPTuners, EFILive, etc) and you can also turn it off with a simple keystroke of your computer keyboard. Plus you can use the software to tune other parameters on engine performance (my current method).

I installed the 1 to 4 eliminator kit and now I don't have to think about how fast I'm going, is the engine warmed up?, etc. I just drive and shift gears when I want to, not when the computer thinks I should. I like driving without having to think about it. No nannies watching over me when I learned to drive a stick shift, back in 1954.

So I guess that suggesting the OP get and read the car's manual would also be a reason, eh?
Sometimes it gets old hand-holding a never-ending line of folks who can't figure out OBVIOUS stuff themselves.
If a light shows up on the dashboard, the odds are pretty good that it's explained somewhere in the first 20 pages of the manual.
Sometimes when I forget, I just double clutch it and tap on the gas, as though I am down shifting and I'm in 2nd gear.
This is why I bought the CAGS defeat before I even took possession of the car. I don't want to have to worry about it at all. I want the gear I want, when ever I want it. I don't even want the minimal lag while I remember what I forgot I should have done. Just get the defeat and it will never bother you again.

Ditto. All this "drive around it" baloney is a mystery to me. Of course I *can* drive around it but WTF should I have to? Or want to? For $20 I can PLUG IN a fix that lets me drive the car the way *I* want to 100% of the time with zero further input from the efficiency police.

For me, 99% of the time CAGS is not an issue. Driving styles will dictate the need for a CAGS eliminator. Howerver, my driving style eliminates the need for one. But, it is nice to have choices
