I am thinking of doing a high stall converter in my stock A6. Anyone got ideas on what stall to go with? I might, and I mean MIGHT do a supercharger in the future, but no other mods will be done that I can think of yet... Also how much time can I expect to pick up in the 1/4 with a converter? Will I need slicks, or can I run street tires to see a difference?
If your gonna do future mods go with a 3200-3600. If not stay around 2600-2800. The larger one will be too much with out mods probably. You car will be able to push it but you wont get the full potential of it. You will see a difference on street tires BUT under any real high throttle its probably gonna chew em up BAD. Do get the best results at the track use with DR's.
Yes drag radials. I use them with my 3200 stall and H/C car. They hook up just fine. In fact a lot of guys all the way up to about 600hp or so use them.
I've got a nearly new Vigilante 3200 converter for sale Getting rid of it as part of Chuck CoW's attack pack..new rear end gears mean i need a lower stahl... This vigilante was $799 new.... got it for sale for $400 if you were interested.
Anyway you go... a converter is a great way to increase performance.

How low a gear you going with? I have a 3600 stall with 3.42's, I cut 1.50 60' times.

Why would you want to go with a lower stall just because your swapping gears? A high stall converter is an absolutely perfect complement to a gear upgrade and anybody who tells you different is misleading you.
In talking with Chuck... he suggested it based on my car having a supercharger... just to get more out of it at lower rpm's.... I trust his recommendation so just following his suggestion on it.

Exactly - I've making a little over 600 rwhp and couldn't imagine pulling out my converter because of the gears.
Granted, you can't run as high of a stall with a blower but call Dave at Yank Performance and ask how many 2800-3200 converters he sells to guys with supercharged cars.
You'll probably be leaving at least 2/10ths on the table if you go back to a lower stall.
I'll do some digging on the subject... Have until first week of April before I head to Chuck's place in NY.
You're making the right move....Keep the faith and you'll have car that cruises like stock...
I've driven every A6 converter out there and the biggest problem with them is driveability.
The other issue, is the guys that own them don't really know what's wrong with them...
Too many converter owners wrongly judge the converter's "performance" based on the 3000+ rpm launch they feel off the line.
The problem is crank speed vs. turbine speed gets way out of whack and there's nothing you can do about it.
You carry that stall speed right to redline and that's wrong.
Slippy, small diameter converters do not work in A6 cars....I've removed a bunch of them and EVERY person we've installed our new converter for is glad they've changed it.
Soon, there will be a new sheriff in town!

I have no driveability problems with mine, it shifts fine!!
My car drives better now than ever it did before,
my trans temps are lower than the coolant temps.
There is a lot off guys out there that have NO Issues with a High Stall converter
I drive my car everywhere without problems.
You were right on the 3.42's they helped, but the converter complimented the gear set, I had No problems with tuning the trans, it was straight forward.
But your opinion just like mine mean nothing it's up to the OP,
he needs to ride with someone thats has one with engine mods to see what works for him.
