Hi, I am new to the forum, I just purshased an 06 coupe, with 9600 miles from a dealer in Illinois. Our state mandates emission controls, and does inspections. Upon inspection under the car I found out that the original owner had eliminated the cats, and rear O2 sensors. Highly illegal in our state, and never should have been sold in its current condition. My question is how did they bypass the rear o2 sensors? There are no simulators that I can see, just the empty plugs from the sensors. The check engine light is working, lights up and then goes off on starting. I tried to check for error codes with my code reader, but only get error message on the reader. I have been told that you can tune out the rear o2 sensors???? I want to buy the cats for a Kooks header system, and put the o2 sensors ( rear ) back in. I want the ecm to function as normal again ( stock tune ) then I will tweak as necessary. Will a reflash of the ecm do it? As this was done at a shop somewhere, I don't have the original tune to upload back into the car. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
My guess is the car was modified and put back to stock for sale. Are you happy with the car? If not, take it back now. If the car was sold without cats you have a voidable transaction. If you're planning to modify it, just go with it.
They offered to buy it back, but only to protect thier azz in my opinion, I told them to fix it as they gave me a warranty, but last night they refused, and turned the file over to thier attorney! I guess they see the writing on the wall. They broke the law by not inspecting the car, they had the opportunity to not sell the car, to fix it before sale etc.
They chose to ignore the law, and now decided it will be too much to repair at thier cost. I guess attorneys are cheaper. I offered for them to replace the car, like kind and quality or better for my aggrevation, they said no! So I keep my car, fix it, and let the EPA and States Attorney have at them for thier lack of respect for the law. Consumer Fraud, deceptive practice, and selling an emission tampered vehicle, also registering an illegal vehicle for driving on Illinois highway, and breech of warranty! They have problems, Big ones! I am trading someone the modded parts for a stock system, even up. by next week the car will be bone stock, with a reflash, OEM exaust and o2 sensors. I will be legal, and they still will have a pending lawsuit! Payback is a B----
Not after all of the BS I have gone throgh to make this car legal!
smart move. wouldn't surprise me if this car's vin isn't flagged in the state's system as modified and then returned to stock, if and when. means to me someone will always be looking a little more closely at it when the vin comes up. you mod it, unless you're good at it, they'll find it. and then more trouble.

If you really want a emissions legal vehicle, let them void the sale and take the car back. Then go find one that is legal. There are lots of used Corvettes on the market today. What have you lost financially?
They would still have the problem of making the car legal again.
This would save you a lot of time, expense, and aggravation.
If they have turned it over to their attorney, you will have to do the same. At the end of the day, the only winners will be the two attorneys.
I would personally like to spend that time cruising in a nice Corvette then with an attorney, preparing for court, or in court.
