Default Final question on CAI

About to choose from the Blackwing, AiRaid or K&N. Dont want to cut the schroud fo the Vararam. I know everyone has many opinions, but which would be the better choice of the above.

Callaway w/ pre-cut shroud. Not having an open shroud is kind of a waste of the CAI, and defeats the purpose.

A question about a CAI was wrong...what your looking for is another intake not a CAI.
There's a few guys that have proped open certain areas of the front end to get fresh air without cutting. Do a search and maybe you will like that option.
You need to feel out your profile. If you have a LS 3....you have a good intake, and will go faster only because your billfold will be lighter.

I just picked up an 08 LS3 with 10k miles. It has the 430 HP. As I mentioned, I really dont want to do any cutting to the shroud. Just looking to have it breath better, then install corsa exhaust. AiRaid, Blackwing, K&N, who knows at this point.
That carbon fiber K&N sure does look good...

Look at the Halltech Killer Bee II. I just installed one on my Z and it is a nice product. They even have a little suggestion of opening up the shroud just a touch on each end of it, to let some cool air in.

Buy a CAI, not just a filter/ snorkel replacement. If there is no provision for fresh air to enter the replacement filter it is NOT a CAI.

If you don't cut the shrould or add fresh air ducts to the filter it's not a CAI. K&N wised up, they don't advertize their filter replacement as a CAI anymore. Must have gotten sued?

I had the Vararam installed today and it makes a HELL - O of difference. I was on the feeder and punched it to get on the interstated and it threw me back. My car has always had a fair amount of power but the CAI makes a huge difference. After taking the filter housing off you realize how limited your air intake is. It is a must to cut the shroud .

Switched from Halltech to KN (warrenty issue). Made a cold air box. Keeps the eat sink down.

Unless you just really want something different than OEM, getting anything that doesn't allow your engine to breathe air from someplace other than a hot underhood location is just a waste of $$$.

If you're afraid to cut the shroud, then just prop it open and keep the stock filter. Search "propped shroud" for details.

I ended up buying the Vararam today. Most of the opinions seem to lean on it. Those of you that have the VR, any concerns about more dust entering the engine compartment with the schroud now being cut?

You could always opt for the Attack Blue drop in air filter from TKO Performance. Several members have installed it with very favorable response. The stock intake is pretty incredible on the LS3, the only thing that stinks is that bulky air filter that comes stock.

You won't get a lot of dust in the engine compartment with the Vararam. You can make a shroud that covers the whole area. It's really easy to make it yourself. You can buy a piece of plastic and cut it to shape with a box cutter or heavy duty scissors. If you are interested send me a pm and I'll take pictures of mine and email them to you so you can get the general idea. I've seen this done by several tuners or you can do it yourself. I did mine and it turned out well. Like I said anyone can do this mod but if needed your local tuner should be able to fabricate something for you.
