Default code problem solved - probably

The skip shift eliminator bypasses the circuit and has never tripped a code until yesterday - any ideas?[/QUOTE]

I called Mid America, where I got the thing, and they told me that it is nothing but a loop with a resistor in it and rarely, the soldered joint to the resistor breaks. I took it apart and the soldered connection was broken, so I resoldered. I will have the code cleared and let everyone know if the problem is not solved. Thanks for the input.

Default Unwanted CAGS feature

Ed,

I've been following the various threads on this topic. I am a C6 newbie who takes issue with the awkward CAGS feature. I actually bought the Smart Glow fuse device. I have read about a number of other approaches to the problem ending with your post.

So I thought what the heck, this is a Corvette, why not drive it with a little more gusto as you and many others have suggested. So I took a long drive paying attention at first to my speed and RPMs in the HUD. In a short time I got the "feel" of winding it up a little more. You are correct! CAGS is really a non problem and the car has a lot more character running up the gear train sequentially. I will mothball the fuse and just enjoy my wheels!

Thanks - Bob

It only takes like 30 seconds to install the fuse, so........... You might as well just put it in. I definitely don't baby my car, but sometimes when in cruise mode the damn CAGS would get me by surprise.

No reason to "drive around" it when it can be easily eliminated.

Knock the CAGS all you want, I think it's an easily ignored or bypassed design by Corvette engineers that saves buyers the $1,000 Gas Guzzler Tax.

I installed the CAGS eliminator within two weeks of buying my car. I prefer to concentrate on other things while driving besides at what RPM my engine is at, as to whether I should shift or not. I learned to drive in 1952 on my Mom's 1952 stick shift Chevy. Didn't need a CAGS then and I don't need it now. I shift to second gear when it feels right to shift, not when the car thinks I should shift.

Maybe someone can answer a question for me... I thought C6 Z06 had the fuse to defeat the cags ? I never had mine go and make me shift to 3 or 4th gear before, then i had a ck engine code that had to do with the cags... the dealership said i had a loose wire or whatever now after they fixed it I notice the cags is working ! I thoght I didn't have the cags before but now it seems i do. what did the dealership do that has made this thing start making me shift differently ? What is the fuse number or spot ? thx guys

Did you buy the car new? It sounds as if someone disconnected(unplugged) the solenoid(located in the transmission) put in the CAGS eliminator(resistor) to fool the computer into thinking the solenoid was still in the circuit. Possible that the CAGS eliminator went bad( broken lead or burned out resistor) and the dealer just reconnected(plugged) the wiring back to the solenoid. If so, that's why you now have the the CAGS working.

GM didn't offer a CAGS defeat since that would have violated federal regs. The easiest way to defeat CAGS is to train your right foot to behave differently. Most people get caught by it when driving in slow traffic like when taking off from a light.

CAGS will activate and force the 1 to 4 shift if you shift out of low above 14 mph and less than 20 mph while maintaining a light throttle. CAGS will not activate if you shift to 2nd before 14 mph or when you hit 20 mph. CAGS will not activate if you are aggressive on the throttle. In slow moving traffic, since the car can run quite well at low speeds in 2nd gear, the best bet is to shift to 2nd around 10 mph.

DO the Smart Fuse route, a couple of bucks, 2 minutes of time.

I believe it is fuse #10, blow the smart fuse (I hooked my car battery charger to each side of the fuse to blow it) Install in position #10.
The 1to4 on the dash still lights, but I am now able to shift into second.
No codes, no problem. I have an 08.

Is the fuse in that position diff than another fuse ? Smart fuse ? Can i just put in any blown fuse in that spot ?

I think I saw one of these fuse thingys for about $20 ... and that seems pretty good price... I have speed bumbs in my neighborhood, and i must slow down or drive slow, and sometimes the cags now gets me and also in traffic here in Phx.

thx guys

ok now i see what your talking about... i'll go to the auto store and get one of those fuses.

Maybe when I had my stereo worked on the shop might have replaced the fuse in that spot... I know they had the fuse box open and maybe it had a led on , so they could have replaced it not knowing it was supposted to be "blown"

who knows... thanks for the info... no more cags for me soon
