Default Help me pick a cam.......PLEASE........

Hey everybody. I need some help picking a cam for my C6 Z51 MT and there is currently 46,7XX miles on the clock. Current mods are in my sig. I have done quite a bit of research in the past week or so but I thought I would some opinions from some forum members before I pull the trigger

First and most important. I am looking for a cam that won't affect the driveablity TOO much. I can handle a little adaptation from a new cam but I dont want to totally change my driving style to accommadate a new cam

Second. I dont want an agressive lope. Mild but nothing drastic. I know this will be totally biased and opinionated but I think everyone has a general idea of what an agressive lope is.

Third. Good power potential from either idle-6200 or 1400-6200 RPM. What I mean by good power would be 30+RWHP.

Fourth. I plan on adding a nitrous kit in the next 6 months or so once I get tired of the cam.

I know all of you will say that im asking way too much out of a cam. All of these I have listed below mostly meet my needs for the most part but I dont really underatand all the intake, exhaust durations and the lifts. All of the links below are pretty much pretty much priced in the 950-1100 dollar shipped to my door range except for the Texas Speed setup which is only around 800 shipped which does not require the dual valve springs. All kits include the following:

- Cam (ofcourse)
- Dual valve spring sets
- C5R timing chain or Double roller timing set
- Chromoly rods
- Head gaskets

The following cams I am interested in are:

http://www.livernoismotorsports.com/...t.phtml?p=1939

http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog...id=88&pcid=122
(99-TR-CHEATR v.3-CAM)

http://www.lgmotorsports.com/catalog...2be6f3cf4e0769
(G5X2)

http://texas-speed.com/shop/item.asp...d=166&catid=44

Please dont reply to this thread with "Try using the SEARCH button" and please dont make this thread in to an argument either. Im just looking for some honest opinions from members that REALLY know their **** when it comes to cams. Sorry for the long thread, i just wanted to be through. Thanks in advance!!!

I also forgot to ask, do I have a 1 or a 3 bolt camshaft? My build date is 08 MAY 2006. I just noticed my mods are not showing in my sig. Current mods are:

- SLP Loudmouth I
- Vararam CAI

Ragin Racin Lethal Z cam -- I am considering this cam too, but others seem to get good results with very very good driveability. But I will let others who actually have the cam attest.

For your stated goals of the cams you listed I'd say go for the Thunder Racing or Texas Speed (114 LSA) cams.

I think the others may have too much overlap for you.

Default What are your Goals ?

It seems most members really dont have A plan when they start modding.
I will speak for myself for starters. I got a impulse to have A little more power and done exactly what you did. A vararam and some catbacks. The Car ran good and sounded like it had 50 more RWHP when in fact it didn't.
as it turns out LONG TUBE HEADERS and A PRO tune made A big difference as measurable on A dyno. 387 RWHP was close to A real 50 HP increase.
Added A FAST PORTED and I was at my end as far as not taking the engine apart for more RWHP. It did not take but a year to consider A cam.
" I want A CAM that will give me plenty of HP/TQ and still be able to drive my grandmother to Church" I could not tolerate BUCKING, SURGING, GAS SMELL to name A few. That statement limited my choices to something mild. Middle 230's is the CAM. Its tough to sort out what my dominator2
is or my stage 7 or even my neck snapper extereme. Its complicated at
that point in selecting A cam and I would seek the advice of A well known professional who has built many as opposed to just asking as A general question which cam is best. Sorry to be so lengthy but just trying to get perspective and some degree of planning with mods as you move foreward in this venture.

Hey Nick,

Just tell exactly what you're trying to do/what are your overall goals and we can go from there.

Thanks,

im kinda in the same boat as the OP. Im a 70 mile a day driver and looking for a lil more power (30hp or so) but dont want to sacrifice reliability.

I dont mind a slightly more agressive idle though. Reliabilty is my main concern. Any vendors wanna quote me on a package price?

Use the ever popular 230XFI/234XER 114+2 which makes 455rwhp on a stock head car with a FAST intake. Using thinner gaskets as you are planning will make the low end wake up and will get you 460rwhp up top. With Trick Flow heads later on it will just make 500rwhp.

This cam has been on a number of cars with confirmed results. The specs are not a secret so you know what to expect and what it will drive like since it has only 4 degrees overlap.

Here is a video of a cold start with it in the car:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfDzSjVn508

It has great results in an LS3 and LS2. Tuned properly, it has great driveability and has hit 130mph trap speeds cam only in an LS3. It would hit that with trick flow 225's on an LS2.

It leaves lots of room for upgrading by getting those heads later.

You order the cam from comp cams for 400. Just ask for a custom grind and give those specs.

All the cams listed will give you the power increase you're looking for, the cheatr cam won't even be noticable in an ls3 as I basically have it in my ls1 and no one notices it...the G5X2 is an old design and would run Spins cam before that one

You need headers 1 7/8
I would go with raceprovenmotorsports.net there cam is $785 but youll need a oil pump and underdrive pulley or Englandgreen has some pretty nice stuff as well there's come with just about everything for $1600

Thanks for all of the input guys. I dont have anything planned too big in the future. Within the the year I would like to add LT headers, FAST intake and a nitrous kit. Thats as far as I would take this car. No plans for heads or SC/Turbo. Now the last few posts have me reconsidering just going with the headers first. Im a little concerned it will be too loud with my axle back that I just bought and would hate to have to take it off if LT's make it too loud for me.

I have the LG G5X1 and love it. I kind of had the same needs as you from a cam. I didn't want anything that idled to radical but still want it to make some good power. The X1 has great street manners and does have a nice chop. You know there is a cam in the car.

If I was going to do it again I would go bigger though...

As usual. thanks a lot for valuable inputs.
I have a 2005 A4. Can I install this cam directly. Or do I need to do some modification e.g. changing my Torque Converter. Finally can the A4 transmission handle this power?

You need a higher stall for a reasonable idel speed.

You A4 is fine with it.
