You'll get the "Check gas cap" message and possibly the check engine light.
My 06Z06 set the Check Gas Cap light twice this morning for the first time in over 4 years of ownership. It came on again the second time after I stopped and gave the cap a few more twists. When I got to the office this morning, I took it completely off and reinstalled it. I'll have to see it that resolves it this pm. I have twice in the past got Check Engine lights also due to the gas cap. It might be time for a new gas cap.

UPDATE: Drove home yesterday afternoon and drove back to the office this morning. Total of 50 miles. No more Check Gas Cap light. Taking the cap completely off and reinstalling seems to have done the trick.

Little trick if it's just the gas cap, and that is to pull the O ring seal on the cap, clean it and give it a light rub down of dielectric grease and reinstall it. Also, take a few mins to wide down the ring on the car where the fill cap is going to seal against. Attachment 48333755
As for really what is going on, when you go to start the car, the Rear tank solinoid vavle is closes so no air can leak out of it, the front vent solinoid is helps closed, and the fuel vent lines are pressure leak tested to make sure it holding pressure. So if say the tank canistor solinoid vavle is not closing all the way, or there is a small leak in the air side of the lines (like a loose gas cap or it seal not sealing off all the way), you get the gas cap light.
This is the reason that when you get the light, want to pull the codes to make sure the problem is pointing you back to air pressure problem like cap not sealing off that cause the problem (P0442 or P0455), and not say a corroded C186 connector next to the side of the battery for the rear solenoid that is causing the electrical problem isntead.
