Like you, I wanted to improve the "precise-ness" of my shifter, but just changing the shifter did not get me to where I wanted to be. Neither did changing the transmission fluid to synthetic (Red Line). Both of these things helped (actually quite a bit), but changing the cheap and shoddy shifter box [mounting] bushings completed the "fix."
I suggest that you change to urethane bushings at the same time you install your soon-to-be MGW shifter!
Didn't think it was all that hard to understand, but let me clarify.
I didn't recommend buying an aftermarket shifter b/c IMO its a waste of money. I like and prefer the stock shifter over any other. (Just stating my opinion)
Ive tried almost all aftermarket shifters on my previous corvette and ended up putting the stock shifter back on. BUT out of all the shifters I've tried, the MGW was the best (least notchy feeling) aftermarket shifter I had. Most tolerable. That's why I recommended it over any other if he's gonna spend his money on one anyway.
comprende?
My latest vette had a MGW when I bought it. Seller didn't have the stock shifter and this is why I currently have a MGW on my car. I'll soon be trading it to my friend for his stock one.

I personally don't care for the stock shifter. You prefer it. No problem.
